Hi Rob and welcome to Rootschat...I can not get to my car books at the mo but the reg was issued between August 1922 and June 1929 by Lincolnshire County Council. Any chance for a high res' image just of the grill badge as this may also help in say which make it was.

The writing is pretty dreadful and it doesn't help that there is no punctuation!
Had a bash at that last bit
now what do you think of our ----- good of the Car isnt it love to Bob and H and his wife and best love to you both
?S H ?Ruston/Riston

Well spotted on the car badge! Here's my best effort at deciphering with '/' denoting line endings:
2 Hawthorn St.
Well Dears here we are / among the coal I can’t say / we care much about the /
place its too dirty although / of course we enjoy being / with M [or all] & they were delighted /
to see us we left Home / last Sunday at 10 and / got here before 2 we shall /
probably stay a week. We / should have been at Leeds / today only its so foggy /
but shall go to Sheffield / if its clear now what / do you think to our /
d~~gs good of the Car / isn’t it love to Bob / and H and his Wife and / best love to you both
S H Riston (although possibly Nichols)
Am really struggling with the 'd~~gs' word as it's little more than a scribble :-\
I wonder how far they would travel from Hawthorn Street to either Leeds or Sheffield? I guess they're staying nearer to Sheffield as they'll consider going there later in the day. That might help in narrowing down where Hawthorn Street was if you don't already know the town.
Heather :)

"d~~gs good of the Car / isn’t it love to Bob / and H and his Wife and / best love to you both
S H Riston (although possibly Nichols)"
"Am really struggling with the 'd~~gs' word as it's little more than a scribble"
I would suggest that they are referring to their "mugs" ie faces in the first photograph along with the car. "What do you think to our mugs, good of the car"
The "FU" registration was used in Linconshire from August 1922 through to June 1929
Regards
Malky
-
Malky beat me to it. I was also about to suggest "mugs".
-
Might it be - now what do you reckon to our doings good of the car isn't it
Colin
-
Agree 'mugs', but the writer capitalises words like 'Home' and 'Car',
so suggest its 'Mugs', which leads me back to 'we enjoy being with....',
which I think may be followed by 'M A' or 'M &'. (Not enough writing there for 'all').

Good evening,
The car looks like a 1922/1923 swift 12hp, 4/5 seater with that type of body. Not 100% certain but thats my best guess.
John915
-
Yes, I can see 'Mugs' now and that does make total sense :)
Do you all think Hawthorn St is right or could it be Northern St or even something else?
Heather :)
-
I couldn't see why Mugs would have a capital letter in that context, and while scratching my head about what it could be.....
It is their pet name of the car :D :D Mags
.. now what do you reckon to our doings Mags - good of the car isn't it

The badge on the windscreen is the road fund licence.
Not sure if this could help pin down the year the photo was taken as the design is very similar to the early fifties. Not sure when the road tax came in but I do think it unusual that the tax is on the outside of the screen instead of inside.
Jean
-
Yes I think it is probably Mags- a name for the car.
"we enjoy being with MA" possibly Ma as in mother? :-\
Really not sure about the street name though Hawthorn does look a possible
Jan ;)

Ohhhh my god u lot are brilliant , first of all i only saw the first page with 5 or so posts
then looked at the bottom .
Thank you all for spending time helping me , its great
The names could be "Bob & "H = Harry"
( Henry (Harry) West (1890 - 1934) is my paternal grandfather
and Robert Christopher West (1891 - 1965) is my grand uncle
Maybe its thier relations ,,,, wot do people think although my family origins are sheringham or Norfolk fishermen/women

Any help
name at bottom "bishop" but what are the initials
Could be Bishop , it's very unclear. Second initial is H - see Home, first one I think could be S, T or even J
Does Bishop mean anything to you?
Jan ;)
-
susan sophia bishop (1868 - 1947) Owthorne, Yorkshire, England
is my great grandmother
could be then bishop , looking deeper
Thanks
Rob
-
So maybe this is Sophia and Henry visiting Sophia's parents perhaps ? Would they have still been alive in the 1920's? Or a sibling of hers? They are sending the card to someone other than Bob and Harry, did their sister Laura marry so she and her husband could be the recipients?
Jan ;)

Thanks janan

I see from censuses that Susan has a sister Mary Ann - could be the M A they are visiting. Might be worth tracking her?

so born abt 1867
born Sheringham, Norfolk
Address: Havane House, New St, Sheringham, Norfolk
Married
James Henry Bishop 44 fisherman
Maria Blanche Bishop 43
Florrie Bishop 19
Beatrice Bishop 13
Leggie Bishop
maybe i'm on a wild goose chase
also in photo group is that the same man far right as on first photo
Rob
-
It could be the same man but difficult to say for definite.
By the way if you are wanting help tracing the family back I suggest you start a new thread on the Norfolk board or this thread will become confusing. Also you mustn't cut and paste from other sites as it infringes copyright, you can only post your own transcriptions from census images.
Jan ;)
-
Thank you very much for you info , a great help
did not realise about infringement of cut & paste its just too easy to do
as it saves alot of time , but thanks won't do that again
Rob
-
Don't worry you know now ;D
Jan ;)

Hello!
Am excited to find this post as this photo has been in my family for ages and I was told that it was my Grandfather, Richard Bishop ( of lifeboat lodge Mablethorpe) would be good to get in touch as I believe we have quite a few Bishops in common, from Sheringham and later Grimsby.

And finally... the car is a Swift Ten Q type Tourer (with a whopping 10bhp!). :)
-
There's a Hawthorne Street in Barnsley plenty of coal mines around the area at that time.
-
Good evening,
Sorry nat but that is the wrong car, that is a 1925/6 model. The one posted originally is the 1923 model with the headlamps on the wings not in front of the grill. Also the spare wheel drops in a slot on the running board not on top of it and no fuel can.
The windscreen has no surround on it on the original either, just a plain glass with no edging.
John915
-
Cheers John - oh well, at least I got the 'Swift' part right. ::)
-
WELL
I have an updated version of the letter , if anybody is interested
It took a while , and might be an error on something ;D
-
After 'coal' I think it says 'I can't say we care etc'.
Carol
-
I would second that Carol
-
Yes thank Carol
I can see that now
I was sure it said country :)
I just thought it was a good way of understanding what it says
and to let others know who helped previous , as I haven't been
On for a while
