Title: Roscommon town or County
Post by: wolfie58 on Friday 09 November 12 10:53 GMT (UK)
I have been trying to find links to my 3rd Great Grandfather Patrick Flanagan who was from Roscommon, Ireland born c1828.
Does anyone know if an England and Wales census entry with birthplace given as Roscommon, Ireland would mean Roscommon town or County Roscommon?
Thanks

It could mean either. But Ireland was then a largely agricultural country and in 1828 Roscommon town would not have been very large (it only had 5017 inhabitants in 2006) and so statistically there is probably a greater chance that your ancestor came from the county rather than the town.

Many Thanks as I thought.
...We did have Tulsk, as a place of birth (handed down, but dont quite know where from), but I was wandering if it could be the town of Roscommon.
Patricks father was noted as a farmer!
