Hello Jeff
Family search has this additional information.
Child born 1874 John Joseph died 1916. Married to Esther Agnes Lyons 1907 and 4 children.
That would tie in with a marriage to Martha in 1873.
Possibly Martha died and he married again? I can see he had another child in 1877 so not much of a gap between wives.
Unfortunately I can't see all the information as another country but maybe someone will have access and be able to check.

Hi Jeff,
Welcome to rootschat :)
Benjamin Ilett married Arabella Revell in 11 Oct 1864 in Fen Stanton Huntingtonshire, England His father was Robert Ilett and her father was Thomas Revell.
The SA BDM indexes are online http://www.genealogysa.org.au/ and I see the couple had children
Benjamin 1877
George 1883
both with parents Eliza Arabella Revell and father Benjamin Ilett.
Benjamin junior fought in WW1 and there is a digitised record (30 pages) to read on http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/using/search/index.aspx
he says his mother is Elizabeth living in Port Pirie West (and wife had left him some years ago)
Perhaps there were more children born in England ...
regards,
Ros
adding : Eliza Arabella Ilett is buried at West Cemetery and her date of death was 11 sep 1916 age 79 years http://www.aca.sa.gov.au/RecordsSearch.aspx

The Biographical Index of Sth Aust has Ben ILLETT born c.1834 arrived 1875 LADY JOCELYN, married by 1875 Martha bc1836.
I haven't been able to find him on a Passenger List. Someone else may have more luck.
Remember, the Bio Index is not always accurate :)

From SA Archives:
Lady Jocelyn (ship)
24 December 1875
Passenger List 75/9
Volume 18
Ilett 1875 Benjamin 75/9 Vol.18
Ilett 1875 Martha 75/9 Vol.18
Who was Martha? A mistranscription perhaps?

Hi Jeff :)
Where did you find the info in your first post, including the name of Martha? The person who collected that info originally might have just linked the wrong people together.

Hi Jeff,
The Rootsweb entry is not correct with the birthplace of Benjamin Illet so there may be other mistakes. Sth Aust. was not proclaimed a state until 1836 so his birth of 1831 doesn't add up. I've not heard of Bishoptown in Sth Aust., but it may have existed in earlier days. Someone else may be able to help with an answer to that.
Is it possible that "Martha" may have been an affectionate name for Eliza/Elizabeth Arabella? I have a couple of people in my tree whose names on Ships Registers are totally different to how they were known by family members e.g. "Auguste Maria" on the ships list but used the name Caroline on marriage record prior to coming to Australia and whilst in Australia.
Also possible is that the name has been transcribed or written incorrectly, maybe she was known as Beth and this has been mistranscribed as Martha.
There are no marriage or death records in Sth Australia for a Martha Ilett/Illett which makes it seem more likely that she doesn't exist.
Entries from the Biographical Index of Sth Australia are often incorrect and are submitted by relatives, sometimes incorrectly, sometimes heresay, sometimes family stories handed down.
As far as I can see there are no records on SAGHS for a Martha Ilett/Illett. Are you able to confirm anything you may have with the name Martha Illett/Ilett other than the passenger list, that may help to further solve the mystery.
Regards,
Sashar :)

Thanks for the wonderful help you have sent my way. It gives me lots to look further afield. (I don't know how the extra posts got onto my Robey posts.)
