Title: Edward Barton
Post by: JMason on Monday 05 November 12 14:02 GMT (UK)
I have come to a complete dead end. I've been searching for the parents of Joseph Barton b 23/5/1915 75 Cedar St. Derby.
I have his birth certificate, parents are listed as Joseph Edward Barton (Music teacher, Pianist) and Christina Mowatt Barton formerly Johnston. When Edward was a year old the family lodged with The Hamer family in Treharrie, Glamorgan. Edward was subsequently know as Edward Barton Hamer.
I've tried every search I can think of and cannot find a trace of his parents marriage, if it occurred or their births or deaths.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Mowatt and Johnston strike nme as Scottish names.
Any searches done there?

I've tried the census search on ancestry for Scotland and scotlandspeople.gov site for a marriage with a date covering as far back as would be possible for a marriage bearing mind the date of birth of their son in 1915, no matches found.

I found this piece about a Joseph Edward Barton from Llanelli who made violins - may be connected or pure coincidence:

Do you know whether Joseph b 1915 had any siblings?

Scotland's People has the birth of a Christina Mowat* JOHNSTON born in 1892. :)

Note: You can't search SP for marriages after 1911. :(

Edward had no siblings, as far as he was aware. His parents left him with The Hamer family in 1918, after signing a "memorandum of agreement" stating they were leaving him in the care of the Hamers. They never returned.
I have followed up the violin maker (census and marriage) and think it very unlikely that he was the father.
Thanks for the Birth info on Christina, I'll check it out.

A search of the free 1911 in England using first name Joseph E (starting with) last name Barton, occupation Music* turned up a 35 year old Joseph Ed. Barton in Ashby de la Zouch, Leics. We're not allowed to do lookups but if you have access it may be worth looking at him.

If you are using Ancestry - he is indexed as Jos Ed Barbor but you would need to check the full entry yourself as 1911 lookups are not allowed

I've followed the one back that I found & if I've got the same one he'd lost a few years between 1901 & 1911 and would most likely be the June quarter birth 1867 in Weardale reg. district. Can't find a marriage to Christina after 1911 though - perhaps they weren't married.

Hello I don't know if you are still searching, nor if we have been in touch before. I do have information about Christina who was a relative of mine.
