My GG Grandfather Henry Wass was born in Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk in 1844. In 1861 he was a potman and in 1881 he was a beer keeper (both in London).
Whilst researching I came accross George Wass a licensed victualler around the same time in a very well known pub in London (The Archway Tavern) that is still open for business today. George Wass was also from Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk (although born some 20 years earlier).
Does anyone know how popular the surname Wass was in Suffolk around this time so I can determine if it is worthwhile searching for a connection between the two.
Thanks.

Hmmm, whether it is a common name,or not, they are either linked, or not.
Most probably are, as come from the same place.
Shouldnt be too difficult to trace George back and see, as all in census era.
So - where did you see George? So we have a starting point

Meanwhile here is your Henry in 1851. Still in stoke by N
HO 107 1788 356 15

Thomas 19

Henry 6
Do you know who Henry's dad was?
Not Joseph a miller by any chance?

It seems thats George.. Well done you.
I hadn't found George on the census, I found him on a 'old London pubs' type website, just came by him by chance.
Henrys dad was Robert Wass, born about 1797.

I see your family in 1841
Stoke
HO 107 1012 12

And George is not far away, also Ho107 1012 12(indexed Wan)

It will be back to Parish registers for stoke by N to establish the relationship

I thought I had bookmarked The Surname Profiler website, but I do not seem able to find the right one (I expect someone here can help) ?
Wass originates from Sweden, but is found in Suffolk too.
The web site I was looking for has the 1881 census and compares names and locations from that census with the distribution of the name today.

I know the one you mean, Pat, doesn't it come under something obscure like he National trust or something these days?

By the way, I think I have a very tenuous link with your WAsses . . .
I have a Sarah Ann Farrington amongst my ancestors, who married a Mr Cross, then when he died she remaried to a Thomas Wass, who was bn 1831 ish stoke by nayland!
They are on 1861 census at
RG 9 1093 96 2
Though for some reason she is down as Mary. .

Thanks so much for all the help, certainly gives me something to work on. Extra special thanks for sporting George listed as 'Wan', that certainly would have taken me a lot longer to spot than you!
The chances are I will come accross your Wass whilst researching, will let you know when I do.
Thanks again.

From the census I found earlier it looks like he might be your Henry's older brother

Hello
I am interested in George Hood of Selby, Yorks including where he was buried (died at Selby 18 Sept 1845) and also been looking at other Yorkshire Hoods and found this about a George Wass.
From the York Herald 4th March 1843 ...
Lately, at Baldersby, near Thirsk, aged 77. Mr. George Wass. The deceased had lived in the family of the ______ (unreadable, possibly "late") Mr. Hood, and the present Miss Hood, for 67 years.--- About 20 years ago he gained a premium of five guineas, as a farmers servant who had lived the greatest number of years in his situation.
