Title: Dickenson family
Post by: Cazza47 on Sunday 04 November 12 14:01 GMT (UK)
I am trying to find the parents of Beatrice Dickenson born in Arnold in 1891.
In 1901 she appears to be living with her parents John and Mary Dickenson plus siblings George, John and Mary May, in Front Street in Arnold.
In 1891 the same children appear in another house on front street with Henry Dickenson and his wife Mary.
Beatrice marries George Copley in 1909.
I cannot find John and Mary in the 1911 census or Henry and Mary, do you think John and Henry are one and the same person, the adult ages are a little out on the census's but not much!!!

The only 'possible' marriage that I can see Basford reg district for a Dickenson/Dickinson with wife Mary 1871-1891 is this one  :-\

Marriage March qtr 1885

Court    George
Dickinson  Henry
Lane    Fanny
Reek  Mary
Basford    7b   100

Could the entry in 1901 naming John be a mistake or could there be two families which just happen to live in the same area whoes children have the same name?

I think the 1891 & 1901 Dickinsons are the same family
Maybe the father's name was John Henry - or henry John - daughter "may" seems to be using middle name on one census

It looks like the 7day old daughter -unnamed in 1891 could well be beatrice - her birth reg was Jun qtr 1891 - the 1891 census was taken 5 April 1891 - so it seems most likely entry for her

Mary May Dickenson had (at least) 4 illegit children - the 2 surviving ones were William Henry and John Henry - maybe one she named after her father????

Good work Suz.
If he died in 1911 that will be why I cannot find him in the 1911 census.
Think I will have to send for Beatrice's marriage certificate to be sure.
Thank you all.

Have now got Beatrices marriage certificate, her father was John Henry Dickenson.
Now I am wondering if I have the right marriage, Henry Dickenson married a Mary Reek in 1885 but their first child George was born in 1882 in Arnold. In the 1891 census Mary birthplace is Balderton but in the 1901 its Arnold. I did find a Mary Reek born in Balderton in 1861/71 census's but have been unable to fin d her in 1881 census.
Think I need more research on this one

Beatrice's birth certificate would give her mother's maiden name

Have just got Beatrices birth certificate, her mother was Mary Reek.
On her birth certificate her fathers name was just Henry Dickinson but on her marriage certificate he is down as John Henry Dickinson, is this unusual, do you not have to put a full name on a certificate?

On certificates whatever name they gave was entered -no proof had to be given
Very often middle names were used instead of fornames - the Dickensen family seemed to do that -one of the daughters seemed to be known by her middle name .

My grandmother's 2nd husband had 4 forenames and then his surname tagged on to it - he married the first time using his 1st & 3rd name, he married my Gran using 3 of his 4 forenames - his death reg is in his 2nd and 3rd names - but he was always known by a shortened version of his 2nd name !!! His 9 siblings all had more than one forename and they all used different forenames on certificates.
I would never have sorted them out had I not found original certificates in my father's attic!!!!
