Title: Watt Library Greenock-look up please if possible?
Post by: mew64 on Tuesday 30 October 12 23:06 GMT (UK)
Hi, I'm shocked to have just found a death notice for my great x 4 grandfather (John Smith born c1799 Scotland, commercial traveller by trade) on the Watt Library online.  My reason for being shocked is that he died in Moscow USSR! It says 'John Smith, formerly of Greenock died at his son's, Moscow USSR on 17/02.1878 aged 79'. This appeared in the Greenock Telegraph on 26/02/1878. I then found several more of his family members being born, getting married & dying in Moscow, here's two more -
'Ann Elizabeth, daughter of Mr & Mrs James Smith, grand-daughter of late John Smith,Greenock to William George Peet at Anglican Church of St Andrew, Moscow on 08.09.1899.(British date 20.09). (GreenockTelegraph 21.09.1899)'  and 'Richard Smith, formerly of Greenock, died at 3 Hills Gate, Moscow on 2nd February 1902 age
80. Obituary p2. 11.2.1902. (Greenock Telegraph7.2.1902)'
No wonder I couldn't find them on the UK census returns! If anyone gets a chance to have a look for the obituary especially (there should be more information in that) I would be very grateful please. Many thanks.

Did you get that info from the index online? If so there won't be anything further added to the obituary.  The index was copied from the paper of the time  what was in the paper was added/put into the index, unless he died result of an accident.

One of my ancestors died died in fiji, his death was still put into the tele as we call it.

Sorry I don't have time to go to the Watt, you could try and send them an email. They are very helpful

Hi, yes it was in the index, a wonderful resource isn't it? Wouldn't it be amazing if other archives did the same! I have taken your advise and emailed the Watt library, many thanks for taking the time to reply.
