Title: John Coventry and Alice Dowbiggin/Coventry
Post by: pedders on Monday 29 October 12 17:13 GMT (UK)
Not sure if this is right place to post this.  I have identified John Coventry and Alice Dowbiggin/Coventry.  They were both born c1842 in Preston and Wray, Yorkshire respectively.  Two of their children were born in the US - Alice A in 1870 - Connecticut and Enoch NF in Brooklyn 1884.  I am not sure when they went out but they were back in Preston in 1886.  Any ideas to find out when they travelled and what they did over there?

Thanks

Hi,

It looks as though they arrived in New York on 15th April, 1869 on the Java
John Coventry 27
Alice Coventry 27
Joshua Coventry 11 infant. (perhaps a mistake) There is a Joshua born Preston in 1867 with the mothers maiden name shown as Dowbiggin.

Regards,
Mo

Now I know why I couldn`t find them returning - they were back in Preston in 1876 ish not 1886 as they are on the 1881 English Census.  Enoch born 1873/4.

Incoming passenger lists are only available from 1878 onwards.

I forgot to mention that Joshua aged 2 died June 1870 in New York of Meningitis according to the US death index.

I've got information on her family before she was married here: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/23008023/person/1341120955

I am going to update her entry in the tree with this information now.

I've also found them in the 1891 Census with more children.

FYI, Enoch was born in around 1874, not 1884.  Piecing together the family now in records at Ancestry.com

thanks - on re-reading my post I was obviously on  a different planet - I did know it was 1874! I have been doing all my research without subscribing to Ancestry but I think I have reached the stage where I will have to bite the bullet.

Many thanks for your help

I run the One Name Study for Dowbiggin, so do let me know if you need more information or help.  I think my tree is public.  Were you able to see it when you followed the link I sent?

Thanks for letting me know.  No I couldn't get on to it - although it is public Ancestry still want me to cross their palms with silver before they will let me see it.

I have a duplicate of mine on Tribalpages
