Title: All In One Printer..any good?
Post by: pompeyboy on Monday 29 October 12 13:47 GMT (UK)
I need a new printer and have been looking at one in the Studio catalogue..they have a Epson Expression Home All In One Printer(scanner, copier etc) in there for £49.99..what i'd like to know is if anyone has come across this before or have one..is it any good..i only want it for basic printing, scanner etc so for that price it seems quite good.

Regards

Steve

Hi, I have a all in one printer which prints, scans and copies documents and it is brilliant, However, with a capitol "H", please, please find out if you can use "non branded" ink cartridges with it. My all in one printer is one which is only sold by one of the high street computer/electrical shops the full name of which I don`t think I am allowed to use pee see something or other and it will only take the ink cartridges which they sell at a cost of around £25 each which is a lot more than non branded cartridges.
Best regards, jess5athome

Hi Jess yeah good point there..the one i have at mo is getting on a bit..it is an Epson and it does use "cheaper inks" which only cost me £2.50 each and seem to last forever.

Whenever I'm out shopping with my wife, I tend to look at printer supplies 'on the cheap'.
Your local supermarket be it Asda, Tesco or Morrisons all sell compatible printer ink.
The combined colour/black packs are a bargain.

Hi pompeyboy, The problem is that a lot of manufacturers are putting a "chip" on the cartridge so that the printer recognises it as "correct".
I even removed the chip from my old cartridge and put it on the new one and it would still not print, just kept stating that the ink needed replacing.
Aw well, you live and learn.

I have an Epson Stylus Photo PX720WD and OH has an Epson Stylus SX215 - both take cheaper ink cartridges without causing any problems.

The only problem with my printer is that I cannot print card (for my card-making efforts) as it is not a straight-through printer, so I use the other one.

Both are printer/scanner/copiers.

Don't know about this printer, but I have been stung in the past with the cheaper All In One's.
I use mine mostly for scanning.

When the message is displayed advising that the ink needs replacing, no other function on the menu can be accessed.
The only way to clear the message is to replace the cartridge

I am stating the obvious, but it means the scanner is unavailable if the ink has run out!

Just for the record mine is a non wi fi Epson SX 415, uses 3 colour plus black ink.
Ama*** have 3 packs of the 4 inks at @ £8 as a guide price, although I use the supermarkets own.

Please make sore it has individual cartridges for each colour as all in one color cartridges prove expensive if just one color runs out.

Changing the subject a little bit why is it that whenever i try to print any photo or any sort of colour pic that the print comes out  either purplish or a dark blue colour..all inks are full and working fine..this also happens to any black and white pic..is it time for a new printer..i have a present a Epson D92 but its about 3/4 years old now..hence the subject of this this originally.

Using 'compatible' inks may be your problem.  You don't know what's inside these cartridges when you buy them.

If whilst printing a 'coloured' image, the image comes out with a coloured tint I would do a print test.
After clicking onto printers/printer preferences then maintenance do a nozzle check to find out which colour is not printing. (come back if not working)

I have a Hewlett Packard Photosmart (model number unknown) which prints, photocopies and scans. I think it's wireless too. I mean we can print to it from laptops anywhere in the house. Very handy. Works well.

Something I check is the cost of new ink cartridges when deciding on a printer. I had one previously which would take the cheaper ink cartridges but it did not show the level of ink remaining which was a real pain as we often ran out mid print job. If I remember correctly, like Anne, if one colour ink was low it just wouldn't print at all. I hated that printer with a passion.  :)

I also like the various options like 'economical' which I think must use less ink.

My cartridges cost around AUD $16 each and I buy the HP ones. My children both need decent quality prints for their graphics based studies and I find the ink pretty reliable. Cartridges don't last long but we are pretty heavy on ink usage.

Hewlett Packard use an ink cartridge that incorporates the print head where others have just an ink tank.
Better if you don't print regular - Easy to replace ink/head, but more costly.
Others usually have multiple ink carts so just change the 'one' empty.

um, that is too technical for me Brian ( ;D). With the one I have, you can change individual cartridges.

HP have an ink tank plus head attached to cartridge.
(If ink blockage you swop ink cartridge)
Epson (mine) just ink tank, print head attached to printer so if head blocked - expensive printer change.

Thanks for the clarification.

Another thing I like about my HP is that you have the option to print without a white border. Other printers are probably the same, but we only recently discovered this feature. Handy,  :)
