Thanks for that information, very helpful. Do you have any information on his brother John Fawns who died in Kelowna, British Columbia in 1962, as all I can find out was that he never married.

Thanks for the replies this info was very helpful, we think John 1st went over around 1919 and was in Midway BC around 1924, the rest is a mystery until he died in 1962.

He might have worked at a sawmill near kelowna...There is this one which moved locations, Manhattan Point is just a drive Northwest of his address... http://www.kelowna.ca/CM/page482.aspx
Here is a map showing his street and the location for some sawmills, but just found that the one south was really old so likely not in his era...

His friend Charles lived in Winfield , North of him, but perhaps they worked together at the mill at one time...
-
I forgot about these directories, but he isn't listed in Kelowna ...and if he worked in Winfield it hasn't any listings, so may just be a rural location only...but you can have some fun looking through it all....

Doesn't show in Midway until 1927...Tie contr ( Doesn't say which railroad )
1929 still in Midway Tie maker
Random checks of 1936, 1942 & 1947 are same...so seems he just retired to Kelowna
adding: silly me, he was only in Kelowna a little over a yr. according to the death cert....I forget the B.C. ones were that extensive...

Reopening the mill! http://www.forestnet.com/LSJissues/Jan_12/little.php
Not sure if it was rebuilt but this sawmill was purchased in 1969 by Pope & Talbot

Around when he retired Gordon McMinn owned the Midway sawmill and general store.
Haha waiting for a train in 1919, so here's a sight that might have greeted him

Maybe you can spot that big polluting beehive burner from the sawmill in one of them

Was your John born a little further away from marykirk? The following say contact is John Sr.
Says from inch Scotland ...Is this perhaps your John crossing borders at Washington & Canada July 12 1928, as later entry has the exact birth date.... https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XGTL-CJQ
maybe holidaying in the U.S. in 1948? has the same birthdate, 31 Oct 1892... https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XGYP-FJ9
This one says Fettercairn...crossing in 1949... https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XGYP-FJM

JJ thanks for your replies, they are very much appreciated. Yes John was born in Fettercairn, we know he was definitely in Scotland in 1918 and did return home occasionally but still not sure of original departure.
