Any other info on this James McDonald that might help, Kenny?
Age 20 years in 1853(5)?

I wonder if they meant Carronshore, but I would have placed that at Falkirk

Stumped!
When I first saw it I thought it looked like Cambusnethan, which occasionally gets abbreviated to Cam'nethan, but that is not by any stretch of the imagination in the county of Stirling. It doesn't even share a boundary with any part of Stirlingshire.
Carronshore is partly in the parish of Bothkennar and partly in the parish of Larbert, or at least that's where is was in 1842, according to Fullarton's Gazetteer of that date. As far as I know it isn't and never was a parish in its own right, and it's not in the parish of Falkirk.
See http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/STI/parishes.html for a list of parishes in Stirlingshire.

Further info clouds the water even more. I guess you have noticed that it is a part of his army records and served in 93rd foot for over twenty years seeing action in Crimea and India.
When he appears on census he at times gives birthplace as Invernessshire, Golspie, Sutherland as well as Aboyne, Aberdeenshire as well as Stirling.
His army records state he enlisted in Newry, County Down, so maybe his family moved there from Scotland or he made his own way there.
Parents were David Andrew McDonald and Avelia Valentine, David later married Margaret Robertson.

Kenny
From this old post here www.GenesReunited.co.uk/boards/board/genealogy_chat/thread/809497 - was it James MacDonald who married Avelia Valentine and then Margaret Robertson, or his father David Andrew MacDonald?
I have seen mention that James' parents on his 1871 marriage were DAVID ANDREW McDONALD. Engine fitter. NOT decd and Mother: Elizabeth m.s. TURNER (or DAVIDSON, some confusion on this from James' registrations).
From that GR info, this is the family in 1881 with James recently widowed and future wife Margaret Robertson in the household?:
Jas McDonald 45, Color Sergt b. Inverness
William J McDonald 4 b. Hamilton
Georgina W McDonald 2 b. Hamilton
Margt Robertson 26 servant b. Aberdeen
Address: 4 Barrack St, Hamilton
Also, from that GR detail, strong possibility that James may actually have been born in Ireland? Given James' first marriage was in late 1871 and the eldest child in 1881 shows as born in 1876/7, likely some early born children may have died (just trying to see what names they used for their children).

Thanks Monica, Same problem just 7 years later.
Still trying to find James parents and siblings.

Sure is a hard one to break through with :-\
Closest I came (which I think you did too?) for James' parents were a David McDonald and an Isobel Turner having children circa 1810, (two showing in Glasgow for a couple with these names). With your James born c. 1833, it didn't fill me with great hope finding those births given the big gap...

Looks like Carronshore to me and it would have come under Stirlingshire then not Falkirk District as it is now
