Title: William Edward Barnett b 1851 marriage to Rose
Post by: chfl on Saturday 27 October 12 09:06 BST (UK)
Hi All,
Wlliam b 1851 Chesire, Rose b 1849 Hallow Worcester
Having trouble with finding this marriage.
Together 1891 to 1911 in Worcester
1911 suggests they were married 1874 ? but I seem to have him unmarried with his mother in 1881 ?

Hi Chris, I see by 1901 the son is a William Hugh Barnett b c 1881 Hallow, the only birth I can locate is a William Hugh Bird Dec qtr 1880 Martley 6c 282 (Martley covers Hallow) maybe nothing but thought it may give a clue?

Also look for a William H B Bird b 1881 on 1891 to discount?

I can't find a marriage either BUT I have found a scenario that seems to fit but a bit complicated.   I haven't noted all census details verbatim but the individuals are easy to find.

I note that Rose is sometimes Rose and sometimes Rose A. and that she is born Hallow ca.1849.   I also note that son is William Hugh Barnett born Hallow but there is no birth registration for this.

Hallow came under the regn. district of Martley, Worcs. and in the Dec.qtr.1880 a William Hugh Bird is registered.   On the 1881 Census he is living with a William Walton and his wife Sarah in Hallow and shown as nephew - ref. RG11 - 2910 - 50 - 9.

William Walton had a sister Rose (or Rosa/Rosana - it varies between the census) bc.1849/50 (depending on which record you look at).

In the Dec.qtr.1869 Worcester a Rosa Walton married a William Sampson Bird.   On 1871 Census the 2 of them are living in Broadwas, Worcestershire - ref. RG10 - 3043 - 87 - 6.

After this I cannot find the 2 of them together.

William Hugh Bird is born Dec.1880 and with aunt/uncle Walton in Hallow 1881 - cannot find William Sampson Bird or Ros** Bird but a Rose Walton is working as a servant in Hallow - she is shown as unmarried!!

By 1891 - as Rose A. - Rose is with William Edward Barnett together with 10 year old William Hugh Barnett born Hallow like his mother.   However, young William is also still shown living with his uncle William Walton - this time shown as Wm. H. B. Bird ('B' for Barnett??).   Perhaps a wrangle going on re. who was to have custody of him hence being recorded twice - as Bird with uncle William Walton and Barnett with mother (and father?).

After 1891 can find no further trace of William Hugh Bird at all so from hereon in is he William Hugh Barnett?

With no trace of William Sampson Bird after 1871 did he take off never to be seen again hence why William and Rose were not able to marry.

I see others have suggested William Hugh Bird too.

Hi, and thanks for your time

If Annettes scenario is correct, it seems possible, then maybe the Marrriage certificate of William Hugh Barnett in 1902 will declare the correct father...... but then again who knows

William Sampson Bird appears to be in Martley in 1911 (use Samson without the p)

Looking at the free search results on British Newspaper Archive William Samson Bird (56) was charged with being drunk and disorderly in May 1896. Searching for William Bird and Martley brings up other occurrences of a William Bird having run ins with the law - not necessarily him but worth looking into

actually also just come across 15 Jun 1872, Worcester Journal - a William Bird of Broadwas summoned for assaulting wife Rose

Hi Mabel,
Thanks for this, that last little fact of assaulting his wife Rose in 1872 is significant to Anettes scenario
I will need to see who if anyone is listed at William Hugh Bird`s birth if anyone

Hi Mark,

We, the Roots Chat community and I, had got her to be Rosanna Walton born Hallow abt 1849 to parents James Walton (B Pershore) and Ann (Nee Vicarage) born Hallow
Not found a baptism reference yet though.
If you come across anything, or her 1869 marriage to William Sampson Bird I would be intereted to know

Regards and Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris,

No Rosanna Walton baptised in Hallow 1834 to 1852 or any Walton Family !!

I'm currently transcribing baptism from 1847 onwards and have got to 1852.

I only hold marriages to 2 March 1836 Hallow.

I will take a look for William Sampson Bird marriage 1869 shortly.

Ann Vicarage was baptised 10 June 1821 to Thomas & Ann of Moseley Turning father a Labourer parents were not married in Hallow.

Jane Vicarage was baptised 22 August 1824 to Thomas & Ann of Moseley Turning father a Labourer

Elizabeth Vicarage was baptised 2 April 1827 to Thomas & Ann of Moseley Turning father a Labourer

James Vicarage was baptised 11 Jul 1852 to Sarah Vicarage of Hallow.

Chris

I see on 1871 Census her birth is given as 1852 so may be baptised in 1853-54 if so i may come across it soon.

She could of been married before 1869 Worcester ?  I see they were not married in Hallow.
