Title: Rankin(e) McLean - Mull
Post by: Carrie-Boyd on Friday 26 October 12 11:15 BST (UK)
Wondering if anyone can help I have a Peter Rankine who married a Catherine McLean in Scallastle in Mull.  I am descended from their son Niel who was born in Knock, who moved to Port Glasgow.  I have Peter's parents as Niel and Mary and Catharine's as John a supt in the army her mother is also listed as a Mary.  Peter outlived Niel who became a railway platelayer. Any help greatly appreciated as family bible stolen from my grandparents in mid 1970s so lost now ???

Hi  :)

What a shame about the bible  :-\

Can you give some dates for people and events so people can try to help with searches?

What have you got on them so far (subject to time period; censuses, BMDs etc)?

Yes thats them.  Have all census information and everything for Niel/Neil and descendants after move to Port Glasgow and I know that Gaelic was first language spoken at home even when my grandpa's grandparents were alive.  His mum wasn't from the isles and did not speak gaelic.  Have tried Mull website but with no success.  Thanks for reply.  Lots of males in line as Niel only had one daughter called Katie/Catharine, then evens out a bit.

Hi there carrie ,came across your posts for rankin/mclean family. This is also my husbands family which we have been researching for some time.He is descendant from your  neils younger brother Donald, I was wondering if you know of any rankin burial places or came across a young isabella maria rankin. Donalds 2 sons Daniel & Angus are actually on the cencus as staying with Neil and his family.Their mother died very young aged 24. I hope maybe we can share some information to each other if you are interested in any other  family members of Neils. This would be the first near relation I have found researching the same family  :).. kind regard cathy
