Can anyone help with a lookup for a baptism entry at Ilkeston?
I'd like to check if there is a Philip, son of Samuel and Ann STRAW bap 26 Dec 1804 and whatever other detail (if any) is in the register entry.
He is listed on FamilySearch and there are at least 3 other children of the family also listed being bap on the same day. I have seen the transcription available on one website (eastmidlandsgenealogy.com) however Philip isn't included.
This may be because the entry's been missed in transcription, but a check against either the register or a different transcription is clearly needed.
If anyone has the printed version or access to copies and can help I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

The Ilkeston St Mary's Baptism register give Ralph,Benjamin and Ann all baptised 26.12.1804...children of Samuel and Ann........just that..the bare bones.......and no sign of a Philip anywhere.....
Do not trust Family Search without checking other Sources.
Also being baptised on the same day does not make them twins or triplets..it was commoon practice to baptise children weeks or months..or even years after Birth..........PR's give (unless otherwise stated) Baptisms..not Births.
If you have any other queries in Ilkeston..just ask.(There are host of Straws in Ilkeston!)
Derek.

Have just looked at Philip Straw on the censuses.for information only there is a PHILIP STRAW 1803 Ilkeston on the 1851 census and on the 1861 Census...as a patient at Greenwich Royal naval Hospital......ring any bells??
Derek
P.S..was just looking to see if Philip may have been buried as an infant..possibly unbaptised......no..BUT i have found:-
Ralph Straw buried 04.01.1805.............and maybe?? his parents:
Ann buried 31.05.1807 aged 40..and Samuel buried 07.02.1811 aged 48......
Benjamin is still going in 1841 married to Hannah...........

Hi Derek, thanks for your two replies above.
Yes that's my Phil alright. As you see he was b in Ilkeston. Later he joined the Royal Marines, eventually settled in Greenwich and worked at the Naval Hospital until he died in 1867. He was a 'sick-attendant' which I take to mean he was employed tending the wounded and sick patients. His wife Mary was at one point listed as a nurse there too.
The 'eastmidlandsgenealogy' site includes Ilkeston transcripts and I found lots of Straws there. If I can verify the connection it looks as the family could have been in the area from a long time back.
The owner kindly checked the published book transcript for me and it definitely doesn't include Philip bapt with the other 3 in Dec 1804. I wonder where FS got their info? Could just be a coincidental error leading me up the garden path, or or it's been missed out in transcription or maybe he was bapt at another parish nearby on the same day.
I'll have to confirm from the actual register because, like you say, you can't just rely on FamilySearch entries. Do you know if Matlock RO would provide a print from microfich/film or a photocopy?

Hi Sue
The source details on Family search give source film number: 1752154
If you then go into the Catalog section and type in the film number if will tell you that the information came from Parish registers for Ilkeston, 1588-1934

Hi Carol,
Ah thanks very much! I've had a look and can see how to do that now. I expect poor old Philip got elbowed out of the gaggle of siblings when someone was noting them down to transcribe the printed book. :)

I am working from the actual transcript...........

Ok, I'm confused now - not for the first time since clutching at these elusive Straws!
Did you mean you're working with a typed/printed transcript? Or when you say 'actual', you mean you have a microfiche/filmed copy of the actual register?

A typed copy..which I suppose could have missed Philip.I'm going to Matlock records Office next week..and sort it out for you.

Oh cheers Derek, that's very kind. It'd solve a mystery for sure.
Many thanks.

Sometimes the PR's and BT's can give different information.

Hi. I am looking for information on Raymond Straw the footballer. I know he was born in Kirkhallam, Ilkeston in 1933. I have googled his name but all the information is about his football career. He had 1 brother, John, who was married to Lucy. If anyone has family information about him I would be very grateful to hear it. I am looking for a friend who is also a Straw and would like to know if he is related in any way. Thanks.
