Starting to wonder if Francis was actually a Tailor.  There are several  marriages for children who could be those I listed previously on the 1851 Census, who state their father is Francis WHITE Deceased, a Tailor.

What do you think of these two on the same day...

Marriage Register
St Phillip Stepney
Tower Hamlets

Both bride and groom signed
Witnesses were Samuel William JULIER who made his mark and Caroline Hasting WHITE

William John WHITE 25 Bachelor Mariner of 83 Nelson Street Father = Francis WHITE Dec Tailor

Wow thanks both. I can't get to my records at the moment but I am sure my ancestor is Caroline Hastings white, I left that out as I wasn't sure if that was a birth name or a name she acquired on marriage. So Francis white the tailor mentioned on the marriage record will be the correct father, and therefore he was a butcher in 1851. It would be a great coincidence for two different Francis whites in the same area to have daughters of the same names who were also the same ages. This is great and I can't thank you both enough, a tailor and a butcher!

St Andrew Holborn
1836 May 22, Jane Scott, d/o Francis & Ann WHITE, Fetter Lane, Tailor, born May 6

When she marries Samuel JOYCE on 23 Jan 1856 at St Phillip's, Bethnal Green, she gives her father as Francis White, Tailor. The witnesses are Francis White and Ann White.

The family were at Fetter Lane, Holborn in 1841. Francis was a tailor, and birthplace is given as Scotland, which tallies with 1861.

Perhaps the enumerator got it wrong in 1851?

I agree with Jennifer and think maybe it was recorded as butcher in 1851 by mistake. This is exciting for me because after years of doing my family history and finding 386 individuals, Francis White is the first person to be born in a country other than England! Looking forward to doing some scottish searching, thanks Ladyhawk for that info on Francis. I looked at my records and I have very little information about Caroline, she is my great-great-great-great grandmother, or I prefer, my great-gran's great-gran! I wonder where the 'Hastings' comes from in her name? Anyway, thanks all for your help :)

OOh just noticed Ladyhawk. If Jean Scott is Francis White's mother it looks like she had him when she was 13 years old looking at the birth dates. Will be checking this out.

Could Jane Scott White bapt. Holborn 1836 have acquired the name Scott from Francis mother's maiden name Jean Scott?
