WW1 - as Ireland was part of the UK I expect that there would be no separate listing at all. I would guess this would also apply to men from NI in WW2.

This link might help on Irish soldiers from WW2: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16287211 ; unsure about volunteers

Ancestry has the "Ireland, Casualties of World War 1, 1914-1918".

The source for this is "Ireland’s Memorial Records" - an 8 volume set compiled by The Committee of the Irish National War Memorial, originally published in 1923. These volumes provide information on over 49,000 Irish men and women who died in the Great War.

As I said, it's on Ancestry, but is probably subject to copyright?

Maybe copies of the 8 volumes are available in libraries in Ireland?
Or the Ireland National Archives?

Have you seen this site?

http://www.thereturnedww1.com/#

The site owners have been requesting details of family members who served in WW1 and returned after the War and have been listing them by County on the site with a view to organising a commemoration in 2013 for those who survived.

Hello Happy Chappy,

This news item on WWII participants from The Irish Times (http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2012/0612/breaking47.html) may be of some interest.

I recall a news item on the BBC being broadcast about August/Sept of this year with a campaigner who appeared to have a large booklet with Irish Soldiers and their details during the interview. I think he was a Cork man.

You may try the BBC website possibly the BBC I player for the interview. As recognition of their contribution is still current news, details of those who participated should be available.

Pat.

Hi Ddecam:

Thanks for the response, I recently found 5 name plates in my local church
commemorating  5 vets from WW1 - from that I am trying compile
a list of people who fought in WW1+2 from the Local Area,

To be honest I have not though about the list of soldiers who escaped
death and left the army early, it's very topical and a very sensitive area.

Cheers
HC

The Commonwealth website is searchable by area, if you put the name of your area in the Additional Information box at the bottom of the page it will return results. It helps to narrow the search if you add the County as well as the area. If you let me know the area you are looking for I might be able to suggest other places to search.
