In the Mar 1/4 1848 Benjamin GREGORY married Ann nee SLACK in Bakewell. Can anyone tell me who his father was?
Benjamin was a journeyman joiner as was his son Peter.
Benjamin was born in Matlock about 1822 but there were 2 Benjamin GREGORYs at about this time.
Family rumour has it that Peter GREGORY was bright and was going to University but his father stopped funding him and he had to leave as Peter married a Catholic girl, Mary Ann McMAIN in Preston, Lancashire in the Mar 1/4 1880.
Family rumour also has it that this GREGORY family were friends with Lord Derby.
As ever, just trying to get to the bottom of these rumours. Any help welcome. Thank you.

I have checked the Bakewell marriage transcript, but there is no marriage there for them. Where was your information from?
On Free BMD they married in the Bakewell registration District, but not necessarly in Bakewell parish. There are over 70 parishes in the Bakewll reg district.

Thanks, I've got them coming forward through the censuses. Its the story going backwards from Benjamin b. about 1822 in Matlock that puzzles me.

I also found and disproved as mine the christening for Benjamin GREGORY 2 Apr 1820 to John & Phoebe Farmer of Tansley. I can't find hide nor hair of my Benjamin. Perhaps he was illegitimate or non-conformist. Looks like I'll have to order the marriage certificate of Benjamin & Ann SLACK.
