Was born in 1856 in Burton On Trent in Staffordshire England. Married Martha Washington in 1875. Present on 1881 and 1891 census returns in staffordshire area. Cant see him in 1901.
Ellis Island has an arrival of a robt s loffill in oct 1892. Ancestry has a naturalization paper for Robert Shelley Loffill in Jul 1901. Can someone help locate him in 1900 census please ?
How would i find out if he stated in US or returned to England?

Are you aware than on FreeBMD there is the death of a Robert S Loffill in the Dec Qtr of 1933 in the Stoke Reg. District in Staffordhire (vol. 6b page 219). That would make his age at death to be 77 if born in 1856.
I do not know what the S stands for so it might not be him but then there is the Staffordshire connection again! And Loffills is not a common name. The mystery deepens.....

The 1933 death is aged 78 so its in the right age bracket. There arent too many robert loffill registrations.
Any ideas how i would find out if he came back?
Can anyone help me out by seeing if he appears on any later US census returns?
Thanks for info so far. Its a great help

What occupation did your Robert have while living in England, please?
October 1892 passenger list
Robt. S.? Loffill, age 34, Prof. of Music, native country England, last residence Longton(?), intended destination Brooklyn.
Does this sound like your man?

A listing of churches in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle from 1 May 1898 lists the choirmaster of the Arlington Ave. Presbyterian church as Robert Loffill.

This is where it gets complicated! Occupation in 1871 relates to pottery. 1881 general labourer. 1891engine man. That sounds nothing like a musician!! But the middle name of Shelley isnt exactly common! Bit of a mystery.

The 1901 Brooklyn city directory has Thomas Fenn living at 2129 Bergen St., so that seems to be another connection to that address.
