Does any subscriber have any information on Covington Mill in Lanarkshire.I believe that at least two ancestors of mine were Tenant Millers there in 17th and 18th century but I have little information about he mill.Is there any traces of the mill remaining and was there more than one mill in the Covington and Thankerton parish.Any help appreciated.

The 1890s OS map shows two mills between Covington and Thankerton - neither of them named anything more than "mill".

The 1881 census Street Index shows what you mention, ADP:

There is mention here (and modern site map) http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/85817/details/covington+mill/ and also here www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/place_page.jsp?p_id=17119

Is this connected to the family of millers you are looking at, Bob? www.waughfamily.ca/Galloway/

There is a Clydesdale Mills Society, with a website on
http://www.zyworld.com/Clydesdale_Mills/Home.htm

I can't immediately see anything on their site about Covington or Thankerton Mills, but they may have more information if you contact them.  The website has lots of old photos and information about millers of the past.

Hi Bob,  it’s a long time since you first posted and I hope this reaches you.  We could be related ?
I’ve just started my research into my Galloway’s from Stirling, Covington and Thankerton. Would be great to chat. Cheers Ian

Hi Monica,   I’m new to all of this but I’ve just seen your link for the Waugh / Galloway family - wow thank you I’m amazed… these are my family.  Thank you. Ian

Hi Ian

I found my link to the Galloways of Covington and Thankerton at the weekend, and was astounded.

I can't count how many times I've been through those villages on the bus to Lanark. I always thought Covington was a great wee place, and now I have a family connection.

Reading the Waugh website confirmed what I'd found out myself.

Hi Lindsey,  I’m related to William who married Janet Prentice.  Who are your Galloway’s.

You’ll look at the wee village with different eyes now you know your family was there.   Would love to see the tomb for the family within the church yard.

Absolutely loved reading the Waugh information. Cheers Ian
