Title: Forces war records website any good?
Post by: truebritmega on Friday 12 October 12 13:12 BST (UK)
Hi everyone.. Ive just seen the adverts on tv for the forces-war-records.co.uk website.. Ive looked at the site for My uncle... and the search does say hes listed on it, but... if I pay to view it, am I likely to see his full war record? does it show that? for he was killed in italy in ww2 and I know hes in a commonwealth war grave... and im thinkin thats probably all this website will show me?.

Hope someone can let me know, cos obviously, this forces war records sight will be cheaper than obtaining his war record the usual way....

All the comments I've seen so far suggest that all you will get is information already available elsewhere.  Don't know how true that is but the only source for later service records is the MOD.

I saw this website advertised here on rootschat and registered to find out whether some ancestors' records were available.

I couldn't find my husband's father or either of his two brothers who all served in the Second World War. The eldest brother luckily was brought back from Dunkirk and I also have his diary which he kept during a later stage in the North African campaign.

Sorry to ressurect an old thread.

Wondered if anyone had updated opinions on this site? It's alot of money to spend, so wanted to see if others' had found it useful.

Thanks :)

found there was less info available on this site than on others, and felt it was a complete waste of my money. I even had problems cancelling the subscription and when I asked them to stop sending me emails , they just kept coming. I would not use them again personally.

I have not seen a good review about that site. Does anyone know of them having access to information not on Ancestry and Findmypast?

The fact they do not give free trials is a concern.

I haven't found it useful and wouldn't use it again.  The sparcity of actual information makes it not worth the effort to look there at all.

I've heard it's just transcribed records with no actual images to view.

Is this true please?

I've had a good look on their site but it doesn't say exactly what you get for your money.

I couldn't say, when I had a look at their free trial it returned nothing on any relative serving in either world war (2 grandfathers, father, 2 uncles and mother in the WAAF). I since obtained details of one grandfather's service from Findmypast.

They say they are transcribing all the time and constantly adding new records. There appear to be a few collections which are not on FindMyPast or Ancestry. Not sure how much there is though. I have not looked for a while. The last ones I saw were transcriptions of some National Archives records which no one else seemed to have (other than National Archives of course)

Used it
and cancelled it

The information input is sparse to say the least and its not at all comprehensive
Found more info from FindMyPast and Ancestry combined as National Archives seem to split the two sites up as partner sites and thats that
