Hi
Can anyone help I am going around in circles with this one even with help I have had previously
my grandfather was born December qtr 1897 Reginald Herbert L Brown Lincoln 7a 515. however when I try to reseach his father Herbert Brown DOB approx 1876. he seems to change names from Herbert Graham from Ceylon Brit Subject (they have the spouses name Charlotte Anne Heald ).
Herbert brown and Herbert Graham seem to have spouse Charlotte Anne Heald and 3 kids Reginald .. Winifred and wilfred ...the challenge is did he change names or am I barking up the wrong Ancestry tree
The Ceylon Bit I was told by someone on the Site
married 1897 March Qtr
But where ever I can find Charlotte Anne Brown / Graham
Herbert is nowere to be seen as either Brown or Graham
Can anyone possibly help shed light on this mystery for me :)

(they have the spouses name Charlotte Anne Heald ).
She appears to be this one-
Birth December 1872
HEALD Charlotte Annie
Whitchurch H. 2c 205
The district contains Laverstoke which is her stated place of birth in 1901 http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/whitchurch1.html

Hi
the marriage registration is defnitely under Herbert Brown - Charlotte Annie Heald Q1 1897 Lincoln 7a 669
Hugs
-
Thanks if you try to go further back for Herbert thats where the confusion starts
his is noted as DOB 1878 or 1876 not strange I suppose but one says Lincoln and another says ceylon under the name Herbert Graham
but they it gets iffyand herbert is my research challenge any help on him would be great
My grandfather did use an alias name at various times in his life for some reason
I am told he joined uop in an alias name possibly Graham
he always told us not to look for his family he died 30 years ago so I kind of feel safe to do so now

There is a Herbert BROWN (born Ceylon) who shows on 1881 and 1891 - but he is aged 1 and 11, so a few years younger than you would have liked. The interesting thing is that he has a brother called Reginald. :)
Reg had the same age as Herbert would have been in 1901.

Family search gives parents' names
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NF7V-35C
-
Maybe he wasn't in this country before the marriage. What surnames were the 3 children born under?
-
Reginald is married to Gertrude in 1901 and is a member of the stock exchange so I don't think he took up as Herbert. :-\
-
and the Herbert M Brown is shown in 1901 as single and studying for the ministry, so I think this is not the correct family?
-
according to one it was Graham in 1901 then they seem to change to brown
someone else says they were always brown
all I know is I cant get a copy of Rgeinalds birth certificate they say it is not locatable which makes me think the story that he change his name is plausable
-
I think Herbert M is a different chap.
Who said the birth certificate was not locatable? Is it this one you tried?
Reginald Herbert L Brown
Dec 1897
Lincoln
7a 515
-
I have tried GRO and Lincoln they both say not locatable thats why I am having so much trouble I have tried giving them all the ref numbers I have collected over the weeks of research but so far to no avail
-
Oh :(
Would a birth for one of the other children help confirm anything - Winifred or Wilfred - if you can't get Reginald.
This could be their births both under Brown.
Winifred - Sep 1901 Sheffield 9c 616 Sheffield
Wilfred J - Jun 1911 8b 705 Prescot
-
Thats theirs I hadn't thought about that angle sorry I m still an novice at this.
-
anything might help
charlottes Healds death is shown and confirmed as
Charlotte BROWN 13/08/1930 Age: 58
she is said to be 22 when they married in 1897 however her death cert says she was born 1872 not 1875 which made her 25 not 22
dose this make any difference or is that just part of the joys of researching problems
I think I just need to be more forthright about these certificates or I will just get nowhere fast
Thanks guys keep your fingers crossed :o
-
Just one of the joys I'm afraid. Possibly she didn't want to appear that much older than the groom!
Good luck and let us know how you get on :)
-
Ah well it seems to run strong in the family marrying younger men
Have a good evening and thanks again
-
Just a thought, did you get the marriage certificate, what was Herbert's occupation, and his father's. Was his father deceased? who were the witnesses? can we get to the past via this information....
Tks
-
No I am still having issues getting the certs for Reginald which may show his fathers details
I haven't given up but his name issue might be causing it
I had an email last night with the name william Herbert Brown 1876 suggested from Christchurch Hampshire
I know Charlotte his wife was from laverstock Hampshire so I suppose I should check him out it would make sense if he had a second name that could be causing all sorts of problems
back to the searching
If I manage to get a cert I will post the details
