I have just discovered that my gg grandmother had an
illegitimate child in Dunfermline. The child was born on
1st May 1841. The baby was a boy.
Does anyone know if there is any way of tracing such
a birth?

Hi tab11,
This is just a suggestion.........
The parish records, for the town that mum was living , should have the Kirk sessions, on film,
The mum was required to name the father, to the church elders.
So if your lucky, you could hire the film from your local mormon centre. and read the film, plow through the film and read everything, around your time. and hope.
