Possible to Grace Speight in 1860 but need to check
Ignore - wrong marriage
1871 Abraham is shown as a widower
Deaths March qtr 1867
Grace Moon aged 38 Wharfedale 9a 112
If Elizabeth died 1855 - then Arthur Moon 4 and Ann Moon 1 Month in 1861 must be Grace's children but there are no births in the Wharfedale registration district
Ann died in 1864

Hi,
Was just about to ask the same question, also noticed the marriage to Susannah Waite before the Elizabeth Clapham marriage.
Married Susannah 2/9/1832 Guiseley St Oswald.
There's a burial for Susannah at St Oswald on 29/5/1834.
Haven't found a marriage to Grace as yet.
Modified to add still cannot locate a marriage to Grace, have taken a look at the British Library newspaper site to see if there was any announcements listed - none that I can find. However there are a few references to Abraham Moon, cloth manufacturer, particularly his accidental death in 1877 - result of a horse & carriage crash in Yeadon.

There is a marriage between a William Moon and Hannah Clapham at St Oswald's 15th May 1836.
(Brother of Abraham marrying the sister of Elizabeth)?
Brian

Interesting regarding William, if I remember correctly (without logging back on to the site), whilst browsing the newspaper site, in the early 1830's Abraham Moon & I think it was a William Moon were in court having a partnership dissolved, probably the wrong word & names, but when I saw it I did wonder what the relationship was.

Hi all
Thank you sooooo much for all the new info!
I have just looked back at my notes and notice that in 1841 Grace Clapham is living with Abraham and Elizabeth Moon (Elizabeth's sister????) (Abraham's future wife???)
Can a man marry his dead wife's sister?
Thank you for all your help, as always it's VERY much appreciated
Suziq
-
Hi,
I think you may be correct, but still can't locate a marriage, Grace Clapham does look to be Elizabeth's sister, baptism's for both at St Oswalds.
Grace on 27/9/1829 daughter of John & Betty - would be about the right age for the later census.
Elizabeth on 16/7/1821, daughter of John & Elizabeth.
Kev.
-
Hi
Thank you for that Kev, seems really strange that the marriage isn't showing up!!!
I would be very interested in the newspaper report about the partnership being dissolved, could you let me know what website it was on please.
Many thanks

Hi again,
It's the British libary website - 19th Century Library Newspapers. (free access from home if your a member of a library that is 'signed' up to it).
The year was a little later then I remembered, partnership between Abraham & William Moon of Guiseley, Yorkshire, cloth makers, dissolved in 1838.
The year before at the court of insolvent debtors it looks like they were being sued, if I've read it right.
Looks to have done OK in later life as there are more articles were he is mentioned as a trustee.
Also an entertaining account of a trial regarding theft of some cloth the property of Abraham Moon.

Hi Kev
Just found a Grace Clapham in 1841 with John and Betty, she's aged 12 at Clayton Heights so that may throw a spanner in the works!!
Thanks for the info on Abraham

Could the Grace Clapham with Abraham in 1841 be a cousin or some other relative? familysearch have two baptisms in Guiseley for Grace Clapham:
27/9/1829 daughter of John & Betty
29/6/1828 daughter of Samuel & Ann
On the 1841 census you have for Abraham, on the next page is a Samuel Clapham with Ann & children, but no Grace under the entry for Samuel. By 1851 she looks to be back with parents.
Would be interesting to see if John & Samuel are related?

If I have copied correctly, the above url should take you to the Guiseley bmd records.
Have a look down at the bottom of the page.

I'll see if I can find anything.

Sorry can't help with the marriage :(
What about a birth certificate of one of Abraham & Grace’s children this would give you her maiden name as a starting point and may help find the marriage
Yorkshire BMD http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/births.php
(No mother's maiden name given unfortunately ???)
1859 Moon Kitson Yeadon Leeds Ref YEAD/15/453
Baptism Date:11 Dec 1859 St Oswald Guiseley
Kitson Moon born 31 Oct 1859
Father Abram Moon Mother Grace Moon
Not sure whether you have this
Abraham Moon Personal Estate under £18,000
7 March 1878 the Will of Abraham late of Guiseley Cloth Manufacturer who died 20 August 1877 at Guiseley was proved at Wakefield by Sons Abraham & Isaac Moon both of Guiseley Cloth Manufactuers James Somerville Taylor of Bradford Woolstapler & Arthur Moon of Guiseley Cloth Manufacturer the Executors.
-
I don't think it was legal to marry your deceased wife's sister until early in the 20th Century. But it certainly did happen.
The local vicar may have refused to marry them so they eloped to Gretna - or somewhere similar.
-
familysearch have two baptisms in Guiseley for Grace Clapham:
27/9/1829 daughter of John & Betty
29/6/1828 daughter of Samuel & Ann
I think the Grace Clapham born c 1828 Guiseley dau of John & Betty
married Abraham PRIESTLY on 1861c living with Abraham & Grace Priestly is her father John Clapham & William Clapham son age 10
1851 HO107; Piece: 2311; Folio: 287; Page: 15
Grace Clapham with parents John & Betty plus William 4mths grandson
Grace Clapham father John occ. Comber married previously to William Brook
Grace Brook 31 widow of Clayton married 1858 St Peter Bradford (Bradford Cathedral) Abraham Priestly
So that leaves the question of Grace Clapham born c1829 Guiseley dau of Samuel & Ann
did she marry Abraham Moon or were they just living together as man & wife ???
Interesting 1861 marriage St Oswald of Abraham Moon’s daughter Emma Moon to George Clayton Witnesses to their wedding were Abraham Moon J & Hannah CLAPHAM
Hannah Moon married Henry Foggitt in 1860 Witnesses Abraham Moon Jnr. & Rebecca Bradley
Mary Moon & brother Abraham Moon Jnr. married in 1861 on the same day
Mary’s wedding witnesses George & Emma CLAYTON
Abraham’s wedding witnesses Henry & Hannah FOGGITT
Isaac Moon married Martha Smith 1867 Bradford witnesses Joseph & Emma Louis Copperwaite
Arthur Moon married Ada Thompson 1879 St Oswald witnesses Henry Hardwick Dawson, Isaac Moon & ? Moon
As previously said I think the only way you are going to solve the mystery of Grace's maiden name is obtaining a birth certificate of one of her & Abraham 's children

Thank you so much for that information, I'm researching this family for a friend so I will have to see if she wants me to go down the route of spending money!!!!!!
Many, many thanks for all your help

You could always present your friend with the evidence of your work, suggesting that to confirm a certificate needs purchasing.
