Title: Mary Ann Bennett Lambeth c 1840
Post by: taylorwallace on Tuesday 09 October 12 15:31 BST (UK)
Mary Ann married twice: in 1862 to William North and in 1884 to George Treves. Both marriages show her father as Charles Bennett, a cooper.
In 1911 she is shown as Mary Ann Treves, widow aged 71 born Lambeth.
I cannot find any Mary Ann Bennetts with father Charles as a cooper born c 1840 on any census. Am I missing something?

I saw that earlier too Valda, but was concerned that the dad's job was a labourer.
Also that on the 1862 marriage cert a C Bennett was a witness, thought it might be dad?

But also I can't find a family that fits any better though!

Hi

At this point I'm thinking son John is John Charles or Charles John?

20th September 1870 St John the Evangelist Lambeth
Charles John Bennett Full Age Bachelor Printer Broadwall Charles John Bennett Cooper
Eliza Beaumont 20 Spinster New Street James Beaumont Farmer
Both signed (though doesn't look like previous signatures for Charles John or C)
Witnesses William and Sarah Ward

1871 census RG10 423 folio 119

There is a John Bennett birth registration in the June quarter of 1851 which if he were 1 month not 1 year on the 1851 census might fit and a Charles John Bennett in the September quarter for Lambeth but it could equally be a Southwark registration.
Whether he is or is not the son of Charles John senior determines the possibilities for his death. There is a Charles Bennett death registration in Lambeth (buried St Mary Lambeth from the workhouse) that would be about the right age - 33 but the death is in 1848.

Well he was 25 (rounded down) in 1841 so that death could be correct.
But how can he have signed two of their marriage certs if he died in 1848  ;D
Or if as Valda thinks the son John were really Charles John then perhaps it is him who witnessed his siblings marriages?

But is he really or did he just do a bunk  8)

So as I said before the 1848 death is looking likely.

And the witness might have been the son John(Charles?)

Hi

He could have done a bunk but women usually still gave their status as married on the census when that was the case as they still were.

The three signatures on the three marriages don't look particularly similar.

The problem with the 1848 death is the age of John on the 1851 census, and if the same child, 1861 and 1871 censuses. There doesn't appear to be a baptism for te child.

Many thanks to all contributors on this. I suppose Charles (John) could have started off as a coopers labourer and was made to sound more qualified than he actually was on the childrens marriage certificates by promoting him to cooper. He is at least described as a cooper on the 1841 census!
All the streets and parishes involved are very close together so it would have been very easy to get to St John Lambeth from Gt Guildford Street in Southwark for baptisms at the church where the couple were married.
It is a pity that they didnt show father as deceased on the marriage certificates. I suppose if people were just asked "what did your father do?" they neednt have said that he had died!
When/where the father actually died is indeed a mystery but I feel I have enough info now to assume this is the correct family so many thanks again.
