Hello all.
I'm sure this may get asked quite frequently so apologies in advance if an answer has appeared recently. (I've tried looking back at previous postings as far as begining 2011 & can't find anything).
I'm looking to buy a scanner that I can take with my Dell laptop when visiting relatives so I can make copies of as many family photos as I can.
Can anyone recomend a make/model based on their own practical experience?
Many thanks

We got one from maplins in August - Easy Scan Portal col Scanner N90HT. Marvellous!
So good we now have one each!

We took it to a church and scanned the parish books, done photos as well and all came out fine after a few practise runs before we went. Images were sharp. software easy to install. Batteries lasted pretty well too.
Thoroughly recommend!

A friend of mine brought her 'mouse scanner' to show me. I was very impressed, you just scan by moving the mouse over whatever image you need. She got it from Ideal World, but I think you would be able to get them elsewhere. It would be very useful for scanning images which can't be moved etc., just scan in situ.

You will love it Carol!
You can scan flat on a table, or pictures, textiles or anything else that may be on a wall.
The way it joins up the image if larger than the scan bed is just magic!

Sounds great...especially when you get stubborn elderly rellies who won't let you borrow those precious family photos ::) ;D ;D

Ideal for that situation. Also for those albums we all have where we placed the photo on sticky background and covered with a plastic cover. They will not come out now. Just turn the Flip Pal over and they can be scanned no problem.
Just the price. I splashed out though as a treat. Do not regret it.

Many thanks to everyone.
I'd say that the Flip Pal looks favorite.
Christmas is coming so I'll see if I can sweet talk the wife into buying it for me!
Thanks again all

And another benefit of Flip Pal over the hand held portable scanners is that you can put it flat on whatever is to be scanned. Sometimes with the hand held ones it is hard to hold it level while you hover over the item you are scanning.

I've been doing a lot of document copying but with a cannon powershot A4000 camera, 16 megapixels. It's okay for some photos as well. So if you've not got a scanner try with you camera. Just clear a little space. I suppose a scanner is better for the bigger stuff and more definition though. I have thought about a portable scanner for other stuff but not for use at the archives though! I'm going to have a look at maplins etc, thanks for that.

Hello everyone
I got the Flip Pal.
It's as good as Your Tree Searcher said it would be. Many thanks for the recomendation.
I've a few days off work until the new year & got four biscuit tins of photo's from my father-in-law. So I think I'll be staying in the warm & copying them.
Thanks again to everyone for their suggestions.

Glad to hear that you have the Flip Pal. A great scanner. Easy to use and so convenient.
Enjoy your scanning.
Wiggy - you also would enjoy the scanner. So useful when you visit relatives who do not want to let you take their photos away to scan. Do them on the spot.
Happy New Year to all

I think I'll shortly be investing in a few sets of rechargeable batteries.
I've used 8 normal Duracell just this morning.
But still a great bit of kit.
Soon I'll be ready to copy loads of pictures to a memory stick for my father in law.
His family got him a digital picture frame a few years back that he's never used.
He's looking forward to going through all his photos and selecting which pictures he wants.

Father Christmas gave me one too...........and it is very good, in fact some of the images are better than the original, and the stitching facility is excellent, I have been playing with it for a while, have been going through a tin of old documents and photos with really great results ............

I am considering buying a Flip Pal portable scanner (complete self indulgence 8). I don't plan to do any fancy stuff with it just scan photos and certificates, so the stitch thingy will be useful to get the whole image, but what I want to know is whether the £130ish version is sufficient by itself or whether I need to spend the extra £30 for the Digital Creativity Suite 3.0. I would really appreciate some advice. Chrisann

If you don't have a photo editing programme & you want an online tree then a £30 punt might be worth it.However there are free editing progs. & online trees out there so if you're working to a budget you don't need it.

Thanks Jim. I think I'll save my £30 then. Chrisann
