Title: Married quarters, and Military Hospital at Chepstow
Post by: Kanga39 on Monday 08 October 12 07:39 BST (UK)
Hi, My father Matthew Perry Gilmour and mother lived at the married quarters, Drill Hall, Malpas, in 1948. I was born at 131 Stow Hill, U.D. in 1947. My father died at the Military Hospital Chepstow in 1948. He was a RSM in the Royal Artillery. I am hoping someone may have some photos of these buildings, or could point me in the right direction so I could find some. I would really appreciate it as I am trying to get to know my father. Many thanks Kanga 8)

Hi Doran,
Yes I have googled, but didn't find anything. I am not even sure the buildings would still be there, or called the same. Thanks anyway 8)

131 Stow Hill is now the address of an office of Age Concern within St Woolos, Hospital.

The Military Hospital in Chepstow closed in 1945

I wonder if part of St Lawrence Hospital was used for it?

HI,
On his death certificate where it says 'where died' it says The Military Hospital, Chepstow and that was in 1948. So I am very confused as you say it closed in 1945. I will have a look at the links you posted, thank you, and see what comes up. It is so frustrating being so far away sometimes.
Thanks for your help. 8)

I should have read the link more carefully, it says c1945 and then lower down 'Pre 1948 - Military'.

St Lawrence Hospital was a military hospital I believe, the building were barracks but they carried on as a specialist burns unit until the 80's?  So maybe when it closed to the military it became a civilian hospital?  There should be some history on line.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I have looked online, but can't seem to find anything specific. I don't think it helps that I don't know the area at all. I will keep looking on line though. Thanks.

The military hospital at Chepstow (St Lawrence) closed in 1949 - more info here - http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1960/apr/27/south-wales-plastic-surgery-unit

It was redeveloped as a housing estate in the 1990s.
