Hi. I'm looking for help finding information about the Harper/Dunbar/Fordyce and Stewart families in Glenmuick. Thanks. Chica
-
Hi
Harper - would that be James Harper b 1838 Kincardine and living in Glenmuick in 1901?
Dunbar - none in Glenmuick in 1901 so we need more details as to exactly which Dunbar family they were
Fordyce - same as Dunbar
Stewart - 73 entries for that surname in Glenmuick in 1901 so you will need to give more details

Hello Carole and thanks so much for your response.
Yes, James Harper born in KON (I have c 1834 but that's not far off) and living in Glenmuick (died there in 1917 I believe) - must be the same one. His parents were Archibald Harper and Margaret Greig. James married Jane Fordyce. Her parents were William Fordyce and Ann Randall. No info on William and Ann died in Rothiemay I think.
Kenneth Dunbar was born in Strathdon (parents James Dunbar and Margaret McKay), and married Elizabeth Stewart (born c 1845). I believe the Stewart family was in the Crathie area prior to that but Elizabeth Stewart died in Glenmuick - I think (1926). Parents perhaps William Stewart and Ann Bain. Kenneth and Elizabeth Dunbar moved to Glenmuick sometime after 1874? and but before Elizabeth's death in 1926.
I have no information further back than that but I do know that Kenneth Dunbar had (at least) two girls. Margaret Dunbar and MaryAnn Dunbar. I don't know anything about Mary Ann but Margaret was my grandmother. She married William Harper and lived in Glenmuick from her birth till her death (1878-1956).
I am really looking for some filler information from the 1800s for these families. I have names but a lot of the dates are blank and I would love to know anything else too. Thanks so much.

Hi Carole:
That looks wonderful! I'm pretty sure we have the right bunch of Harpers. I have no formal census material, a couple of birth registers that are hard to read (James born c 1834 is what I have but yours sounds much more accurate). It's lovely to know what some of my grandfather's siblings names were too. Thanks so much!!!
Chica :)

1861 - looks like Ann snr reverted to her maiden name
Ann Randall 58 shirtmaker
Ann Fordyce 23 dtr
John Fordyce 14 son
Rothiemay ED 1 Page 11 Line 11
-
Once again, Carole, amazing! Thank you! If Ann Sr. reverted back to her maiden name, does that mean there was a separation or divorce? (I know it would be hard to tell unless there was some documentation specific to that event - would there be a record of a divorce somewhere?)
Thanks again!!! Chica

A possible 1851 for William is William Fordyce 41 b Rothiemay who was an overseer of 142 arable acres & 4 labourers at "Mill of Colp no 1" in Turriff
You would have to view the 1851 image on Scotlands People to see if he was shown as married as I can only access the transcription
I can't see an 1861 entry for him
-
Onto Dunbar
1851 for Tarland Aberdeen - all born there except Margaret
James Dunbar 49 farmer of 9 acres
Margaret 38 b Urray, Rosshire
Nathaniel 14
Margaret 11
Kenneth 7
James 4
Jane 1
Tarland ED 5 Page 2 Line 9
In 1841 - they also had a 1wk old son called Alexander
In 1861 - Kenneth was a farm servant in Towie
In 1861 only James (58) and daughter Margaret (22) were living together so presume wife Margaret died between 1851-1861

That's great! Thanks Carole! I'm brand new at this stuff so don't really have a clue what I'm doing. It's wonderful to have someone experienced to guide me and, for that, I'm very grateful as this must take up a lot of your time. I really do appreciate it!!! Chica

Hi Carole:
So, basically, we can tell that Kenneth left home, went to work on a farm in Towie, then onto work as a carpenter in Auchindoir before settling down in Glenmuick and starting a family, right? I don't know of a Louisa - only Margaret and Mary Ann (and I don't know what happened to Mary Ann - I have never heard anything much about her).
Thanks again so much Carole! It's all beginning to fall into place!!! Chica
