Title: *COMPLETED* William Wilkins of Milton
Post by: silverlining on Sunday 07 October 12 17:58 BST (UK)
One of my ancestors in William Wilkins b. Milton c 1810. He married Ann Loder in 1840 in Headington, where they were living in 1841. They continued to live in Headington. I know that there are several places in Oxfordshire which were known as 'Milton', without mentioning the Milton nr Abingdon. Ann Loder was b. Marston c. 1815.

I wonder if anyone could find a William Wilkins who would fit the bill?

Thanks

Ed

Milton is situated between Bloxham & Adderbury. ;)

No baptisms in Little Milton & Great Milton.......so that's 2 parishes down. :)

What doesn't help, is that it says he was from SHIPTON in the 1881 census.  (Shipton under Wychwood).??

What was his fathers name from the marriage cert/details.?

It says his year of birth is 1807 in the 1881 census. ???

Familysearch(IGI), Bloxham baptism. 15 Jan 1807 -  William Wilkins, son of Thomas & Elizabeth Wilkins.

I saw the Shipton under Wychwood in the 1881, and thought like you that Milton under Wychwood was the most likely Milton.
Bloxham baptism would be possible otherwise, given that there probably isn't a church in Milton nr there.

I'm afraid I don't have the marriage details.

His wife, Ann Wilkins was buried in Dec 1873 @ Headington.  aged 58.  So that gives her year of birth c1815.   As her age varies between 1812 and 1820 in census, I should think this burial/death is right.

I also noticed a death reg in Banbury in j/a/s 1887, and giving year of birth as 1807 for a William Wilkins.  Vol 3a.  Page 499.

No other Wilkins burials @ Headington, apart from Clara Ann Wilkins in 1848, who was a daughter to William & Ann.   She was baptised 4 Apr 1847 @ Headington.

Thomas Wilkins(of Sandford), married Elizabeth Curtis - 17 Nov 1802 @ Bloxham.  (From the OxFHS - Oxfordshire Marriage Index).

I think you need to purchase the marriage cert, or see if anyone can find it in the PR's.    He/they were in the parish of St.Clements in Oxford in 1841, so that could be the place to start.

Williams birth year does fluctuate slightly ??? Therefore a baptism of around 1810-1811 is more likely.

Census - Birth Year
1841 - 1811
1851 - 1811
1861 - 1810
1871 - 1811
1881 - 1807
1891 - 1812

Possible death of William Wilkins -

q4 1893, Headington Vol 3a Page 525. Age 80
The information registered is given by an informant and therefore anomalies can occur e.g. age.

This looks to confirm the correct death as looking at census records Laura Elizabeth is his daughter -

William Wilkins of Headington, butcher and farmer died 14 Dec 1893. Effects left to Laura Elizabeth Wilkins spinster.

JJ, this is the correct death. His daughter Charlotte married my great-grandfather, William Greening, who was in the same line of business as her father.

As for birth year, it is pretty consistent (1810-1812 so av 1811) if you take out the 1881 cnesus year of 1807 as an aberration.

Kimbrey you're a star. This is definitely the right family as my great-grandmother was Charlotte Holiday Wilkins.

Apologies.  William Wilkins was buried in Headington Cemetery, aged 80, of 'Old Headington'.    19 Dec 1893.   'Farmer and butcher'.  (Occupation ties in with census).

I was looking in Headington St.Andrew cemetery, where his wife was buried. :-[

Burials ceased at Headington St.Andrews in 1885.   Headington cemetery took over from 1885 to 1946. ;)
