Title: Emily Hannah Jackson b1862 Islington domestic servant?
Post by: hazelmary on Saturday 06 October 12 08:52 BST (UK)
My brother and I are trying to find out more about our great grandmother Emily (Hannah) Jackson who was born in Fulham in 1862/3. She is recorded in the 1881 census living at home with her parents Alexander Matthew and Louisa Jackson at 65 Hampden Road Islington. No occupation is given. Alexander was a tailor.

By 1891 census she was married to Job Jenkins and  still living locally but we know nothing about her life between 1874 and 1888. She does not seems to have had any sort of skill so we assume she was in service, or some other lowly occupation locally, in Islington, from the age of about 14 (1874) up till her marriage to Job Jenkins (c 1888).

A man called Wilfrid seems to have figured in her life during this period and finding out if he was a local tradesman or employer is also something we should like to explore. Would there be any other ways of finding out if she was employed locally, during these years, maybe as a domestic servant - trade directories, rate books etc?

If her father had a respectable job as a tailor, maybe she never worked.
Does she give an occupation on her marriage cert?

Hi,

On the 1871 census Emily seems to be down as Hannah,  the family are living in the Strand area.

I agree that Emily Hannah probably never worked.

1871 census  RG10/368/10/17

There is a Wilfred Jackson living with her parents in 1891 down as Grandson.

My brother and I are trying to find out more about our great grandmother Emily (Hannah) Jackson who was born in Fulham in 1862/3.

This looks likely to be her birth registration (Kensington being the correct registration district for Fulham at the time, and consistent with where her parents were in the 1861 census):

Birth, Dec qtr 1861

Emily Hannah Jackson

Kensington 1a 138
