hello rootchaters.
Please can someone help me in finding out what the word let means . in 1851 census RG H0107 piece 2495 folio 392 page 7 machynlleth darowen parish caerseddfan
evan morgan shoemaker aged 67 with 3 daughters aged 28. 24 and 13 there are 3 children there in household 1 a bastard age 3 and 2 boys (one of whom is my gt. grandfather) aged 2 and 1 condition to head of house states Let please can anyone tell me what let stands for.
any help appreciated. jere.

Had a look at the census-looks like let but could be set- (short for servant)-in the index at the bottom of the page it says servant.Its the same on other census pages each side of this one.Seems his life was set at a very young age.

I have been asking the same question, I do not think that it is Servant as the abreviation used has a high "t" at the end. If you go back to page 5 you will see examples of both servant and the mysterious let. On page 6 there is a father in law with the mysterious let.
Hope that you someone will solve the mystery.

It is Relation to Head of Family and apparently means "Let to me"

As this description seems to apply to the very young and the very old e.g. on page 6 aged 70 and 75, it could be to do with the poor Law.

Thank you all for this info about Let seems like no one wanted him its so sad of this thing happening but what i was told of him he did not have a very good life and he died early in years.
