Title: Nicholas Gaul
Post by: rebew on Tuesday 02 October 12 16:24 BST (UK)
Hi

I am trying to trace the family of a Nicholas Gaul from Wexford. Son of a butcher named James Gaul, he was married to a Cecilia Horgan from Dublin in August 1889. They lived at one time in Johns St, Wexford Town.

Thanks

what information are you hoping to find. I presume you have the family on the 1901/1911 census.  www.nationalarchives.ie

Hi Ballydw,

Yes I have sourced both the 1901and 1911 census which revealed that Nicholas was born in or around 1855. I am trying to trace his date of birth (no age given on his marriage cert) , what part of Wexford he was born in, his fathers background and the name of his mother. his siblings etc.

Thanks

As his birth was prior to Civil Registration, you would need to know the Parish to check for a baptism. Does it give any details on marriage Cert.

Also check on this wexford site the RESOURCES & LINKS as there is a lot of useful information on here. Regards

Hi Ballydw,

The marriage cert states that he was from Francis St, Wexford. However, I could not find his baptism in the parish records. There was also a James Gaul in Wexford town who married a Kate Hayes. He was also a Butcher and, like Nicholas, his father was also named James,  so I suspect he was a brother of Nicholas. I am still working on it.

I am also trying to see if there was a link with a Richard & Ellen Gaul from Ballymore, Broadway, Wexford. I suspect he was.

Thanks for info on R & L.

Regards

I AM EMBARASSED TO SAY I DON'T KNOW!!!!  I HAVE TRIED TO FIND OUT SOME INFO FROM THE CEMETERY RECORDS AND THE NEWSPAPER BUT NOTHING.  THIS IS MY FRIENDS GRANDFATHER AND SHE KNOWS VERY LITTLE ABOUT HIM, OTHER THAN WHERE HE IS BURIED AND THE DATE OF HIS DEATH.  I AM PRESUMING THAT THE OTHER GAULS AT THE SAME CEMETERY ARE RELATIONS. IT IS AN UNCOMMON NAME HERE IN NZ AND I WAS SUPRISED TO FIND OUT HE WAS IRISH.
THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST.

There are 9 Richard Gaul born between 1870 and 1900 in the Wexford reg district, there may be others in neighboring districts.
I guess it would be possible to see if any of these 'disappear from the records in Ireland' but it's not the best way to go.
You friend must know when her parent was born, and hopefully if that parent had older siblings, that would at least give an idea of Richard's age.

Much appreciated.

I'm just reading over your post again, it sounds like your friend may be jumping to Ireland too fast.
She needs to know her parent's birth details to be sure of Richard's name, and in turn her grandparent's marriage (if it happened in New Zealand) to get their fathers and hopefully mothers names. Than start to search in Ireland.

If you stopped "shouting" it would help.....

One could at least give a "guesstimate" as to his age!!
