Title: Donald Munro & Catherine Dingwall
Post by: beaukeen on Monday 01 October 12 13:49 BST (UK)
I am looking for parents of Donald Munro b. abt 1805, who married Catherine Dingwall in Rosskeen in 1831. I have found a Donald Munro to Donald Munro & Bell Ross in 1806 but have no way of proving that they are the correct ones. Can anyone help?

Hi beaukeen

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Have you followed through Donald and Catherine to their deaths? Did they die in Scotland after 1855? Scottish death certs normally include full details on the deceased's parents (names, occupation of father, where alive or deceased) assuming this information was known to the informant.

Thank you Monica, I can find no record of Donald's death. I thought it might have someting to do with the Free Church & as far as I know the records for Rosskeen have not been transcribed.

So, Donald died before 1855 and the start of official registration?

If he died before this year, even if you did find a death or burial entry on the old parish registers, unfortunately this would not include his parents' details which is what you are looking for.

Can't say for sure but he was dead when his daughter Isabella married Robert White in 1860.

If you know where the family were living at during that period of daughter Isabella's marriage, would be worth you double checking the death index on the pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to see whether anything shows for Donald's death between 1855-60 and the start of official registration. It is really this document that would hopefully give you his parents' names (assuming they were known to the informant).

When did wife Catherine Dingwall die?

Have tried Scotlandspeople but there is no sign of him.
Catherine died in 1866 & from that I have her parents.

It is a pity - I had a look too but couldn't really anything either for him on SP  :-\

Just as ideas. It is sometimes worth looking at the names used by people to see whether they use any paternal or maternal grandparents' names for their own childen. Something to keep in mind.

Could the family you are researching be the one on the 1841 census shown living at
Mount Eagle, Fearn?

D. Munro Widow     age 50
Margaret Munro      age 20
Donald Munro         age 15
Bell Munro              age 10
William Munro         age  8

Since William is 8 years old, this "D" Munro likely died in the period from 1833 to 1841. I assume the "D" is Donald. I also assume the Bell is Isabella.
I am looking at this family as a possible connection with my g-g-grandfather.

Not the same family I'm afraid. My Donald was alive in the 1841census - the address was Obsdale, Rosskeen with family as follows:-

Donald

Apologies - start again
Not the same family I'm afraid. My Donald was alive in the 1841 census - the address was Obsdale, Rosskeen, with family as follows:-

Donald       age 30  a mason
Kate (Catherine)  aged 30
Isabel        age 8
Christy (Christian or Christina) age 6
Alexander  age 4
John          age 2

Would love to think there was a connection!!

Not my family I'm afraid. the D is not likely to be Donald as "she" is a widow.
