Title: Youngs of Johnshaven
Post by: Jim Murray on Saturday 28 May 05 14:30 BST (UK)
Has anyone access to censuses prior to 1871 in which I could pick up Thomas Jamieson Young or Archibald Young both born in Johnshaven, in 1828 and 1781, respectively?

Hi Jim -

Have just found your query regarding my gt gt and gt gt gt grandfathers, both Archibald Young, from Johnshaven.  I have just retired to Johnshaven and if I can be of any help regarding them or the Young family in general, please let me know.  Kind regards, Eileen.

Hello Eileen - have just found your message regarding the Youngs of Johnshaven.  My grandmother was called Mary Ann Young and have traced the family back to 1756.  I was in Johnshaven last year. Are we  in any way connected. Danniel

Hi Jim,

Whilst I've been transcribing the gravestones I've found another couple of Youngs are they yours?

Charlotte Young b. 1819 d. 1863 married Richard Davidson

Charlotte Young Cruickshanks died 1870 or (9) aged 5 years - father John Cruickshanks mother Charlotte Davidson.

I have photos if they're yours.

Hello Eileen

Just picked up your message by chance.  Great to hear from you.  Archibald Young Jnr is a greatx3 grandfather of mine, and I have traced back to his grandfather, John Young.  It would be lovely to exchange information with you - where shall we start?  I was in Johnshaven on a visit in 2005 and don't know when I shall next make it as we are way down south in Sussex.

If you would be happy to speak on the telephone I would happily send you my number.

Best wishes

Thank you for your message JeanP.

I think Charlotte Young is a half-sister of my Archibald Young Jnr.

I don't need the photo but thank you for thinking of me.

Best wishes

Is there a possibility that this Young family is also connected to an Isobel Young, b. Arbuthnott 1770, d. Johnshaven, 1852, daughter of John Young and Isobel Smith?  Isobel m. 1814 Alexander Fullerton of Benholm.  She is apparently interred in Arbuthnott with a number of Young family members (see pre-1855 for Arbuthnott stone #49 for full list)

Hi Wallyf,

Nice to hear from you although I don't think our ancestors match directly.   My John Young c 1756 Benholm married Mary Waldie in 1780 in Benholm.

There were a lot of Youngs in Johnshaven and it's not easy to differentiate between them as the same Christian names were popular in different families.

Yours

Jim Murray
