Hello I was wondering if anyone could help me, I am starting to do my grannys family tree she was orginally from Dublin, but now lives in Scotland. I have her Date of Birth Feb 1927 and her name! * Caffrey or as written on her birth cert * Caffrey. I know her fathers name was James Caffrey and her mothers name was Annie White. I am having trouble tracing them I have found my granny on the FamilySearch website but only information that was on it was the year of her birth. Can anyone help??! not sure where to start, I have just finished my grandads family tree but he was from Scotland so was a lot easier as I used the scotlandspeople website which was great! is there anything like that for Irish family tree? If anyone has any tips or can help me get started that would be great. Thank you :)

The FamilySearch website has an index for BMDs, but you need to order certs from the GRO to see the full details.
see : Introduction to Irish Records (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html)
I'll have a look for the marriage of James and Annie..
Do you know where your granny was in the family - i.e. eldest, middle, or youngest ?

there's a possible marriage for Annie and James in 1921 - the references match, so they appear on the same page of the register :
Name: Annie White
Registration district: Dublin North
Event type: Marriage
Quarter and year: Jan-Mar 1921
Volume: 2 / Page: 493
A James Caffery is listed with the same details.
for notes on marriage certs and how to order them see :

do you have a Dublin address on that Birth cert ?
it might help find other details such as the parents on the 1939 electoral register, or possibly James in a directory..

Yes on my grannys birth cert it is Coporation Buildings? I dont have Patricks birth cert but do have a copy of a baptisim form? which says Our Ladys of Lourdes Church Sean McDermott St Dublin 1.
-
There's a couple of sets of Corporation buildings listed in the city 1927, but going by the church it looks like they would have lived in the north east city centre - so probably somewhere to the east of O'Connell street like Summerhill or Gardiner St.
That area was originally part of St. Mary's , Marlborough St. Parish

Yes thats right its Dublin North :)

on the Electoral Lists (http://www.dublinheritage.ie/electoral/help.php) that Shane refers to there are two couples that could match in 1939, if James and Annie were still living
There were 16 James and less Ann* and just two with matching addresses
17 Brian Avenue and 14 Abbey Cottages
If the reference for the marriage is correct their marriage certificate should state their fathers' names and pin point them on the 1911 census for you and help to trace back further
For James Caffrey (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=1911&surname=caff*&firstname=james&county=Dublin&townland=&ded=&age=13&sex=M&search=Search&relationToHead=&religion=&education=&occupation=&marriageStatus=&birthplace=&language=&deafdumb=&marriageYears=&childrenBorn=&childrenLiving=) I searched on the census for CAFF*, James, age 13+/-5, and there are only 6 results which looks good for researching further

Yes they were living I know that Annie died in 1986 aged 91 so she was possibly born 1895ish?
-
There's an Annie Caffery listed in the 1938 electoral roll as living at 49a Corporation place.
Corporation place was known locally as 'Corporation Buildings' or just 'The Buildings'.
They survived until the 1970s.
Here's some late photos of them before demolition.
-
Thank you so much for that! the photos are great! Yes thats her they lived at No 49. Did it have any other info on it or just her name? im finding it so hard finding anymore info on her at all.
-
I'm afraid not. She's listed as the only voter at that address.
I don't find a James Caffery listed anywhere in the Dublin City area. Perhaps he was not living with her by then.
Here is the link to see the 1938 roll: http://www.dublinheritage.ie/electoral_rolls/index.htm
plus also information on other rolls held by the library.
It might be worth a quick email to them to check some other years. I have always found the staff there very obliging and given that your request is a straight check on an address, they might have time to do it for you.
There's a James Caffery listed as buried in Glasnevin having died in 1932 aged 66 - could he be something to you?
-
Yes ill defo give them an email, as really struggling with this family tree. My granny who is 85, doesn't remember much about her mum & dad anymore so cant really ask her. Is Glasnevin in Dublin, this may be him as I know he did die when my granny was little but just not sure how old she was. If it was him she would have been 5 so could be him if Glasnevin is in Dublin?
-
May I suggest if she is willing to talk about others that you let her and see what comes of it
I have found that some conversations that start about describing an area or family can lead to what you want rather than asking specific questions
e.g. I was discussing an ancestor with a relative, I had most of the information on him but I let the conversation go on about where he lived and what he did etc when in the middle of it all I was told that "of course your know his youngest sister was his daughter" This I was not aware of! but I said yes and got blow by blow a whole story I know would never have come out had I just asked the question straight out!
While you have your granny just ask her what she can tell you and let her talk if she likes to; you'd be amazed at what may come of it!
-
I do, I dont really ask her specfic questions but she is not very well now and gets a lot of stories confused or mixed up we could just be chatting about one person then she will go onto a completely different person from another family, sometimes not even our own! ???
-
Yes Glasnevin is in Dublin and would be the main graveyard for people from the north inner city in those days.
http://www.glasnevintrust.ie/genealogy/
If you go to the reference for the Electoral Rolls, you will get a page from the actual roll, which will give you names of neighbours in 'The Buildings' which might trigger something in her memory.
-
I think this could be him, I will need to try and find out if this was his age when he died. In my home town of Perth, Scotland. We are able to email our cemetery service with a date of death and name and they are able to tell me where the person is buried and who they are buried with do you think this would be something that the glasnevin trust would do?
Thanks
-
I would imagine they could, though there might be a small fee as I would say they are quite busy.
-
its possible that i may know your nans relations...i know of a large family called caffrey from the general area.give me a bit of time and i will find out and send you a pm.
