VERE m English. From a Norman surname which was from a French place name, which was itself derived from a Gaulish word meaning "alder". http://www.behindthename.com/names/letter/v

Around 1980 I worked with a man called Vere. He usually used his middle name instead because he was tired of having to spell it, and explaining that he didn't know its origin! It had been passed down through his father's family but apparently no-one knew why.

I do not know when they were married.
Thomas married Ester and had the 3 children mentioned.
He married a 2nd time to a Sarah Kinnersley 1760, and had a further 10 children, one of whom was named Charles Vere Webb. The Vere name was first noted in the previous marriage.
Thank you for the input. One day , it will become evident as to where it came from.

Had a look for you regarding the name Vere
It does have different spellings over the years and was normally used
as a surname. However, apart from being classed as French it is
also from a Latin word meaning True. This would be a very good
name if you were a church goer and would have been mentioned in
Church as they used to have Latin sermons.
It was also a word which was associated with being 'posh' as we
say today. The upper classes de Vere,Viers, etc were a noble family
who came over from France
Different spelling also of Vere is the dutch word Viere meaning fourth
so could have been the fourth child who originally got the name?
I just found something else that might interest you.
Joan Dingley(Dobson) was a alleged mistress of Henry V111. She had a
daughter who was called Ethelreda also known as Esther or Audrey. As a girl
she was never acknowledged by Henry as he wanted sons as we all know.
She did however, get lands given to her by Henry? and as she was
just a Royal Launderess SO makes you wonder what else she was doing ;D
Love researching history.
Might be an idea to find out what lands he gave Ethelreda and also where
your Dingleys came from before you found Esther in Birmingham.
regards Sandymc
ps. The Thomas mentioned born 1st January 1756 died on the 20th January 1756

I have just started a thread on here re the name Vere. I have been referred to this thread.
The Vere in our family that I know of was born in 1899. I have found other Veres and de Veres
with the same surname Short born around the same time in Australia. I am glad that on this thread I can see the name has been running for years. I have not been abe to trace ancestors of the 1899
Vere with the name though although they appear to reuse a lot of names in the generations. Sandra

Martha Dingley married John Haddon 3rd August 1740 St. Mary, Bridgwater, Somerset
Burial of Martha Haddon 12/4/1761 St. Mary, Kingston, Somerset.
Probably of no help but you never know might be a Somerset connection somewhere.

Hi Syljun
You could well be right. The family I am searching for are the Shorts. I have threads on Other Countries India and Derbyshire. They appeared, living in comfortable circumstances, in a marriage in 1768, in Dronfield. But tracing them before that has proved impossible so far. The only clue is that
when the son , Lawrence, was baptised in 1769, his father was shown as of Dronfield , formerly of Madras.
I am doing fine after 1769 with help from roots chatters. Thank you for your input. Sandra
