Post by: pollocm on Sunday 23 September 12 01:55 BST (UK)
Does anyone have any information on this family it is my great grandfather and greatgrandmother they lived at 49Cumberlane street and then moved to Hollywood, Belfast. A Mary Cunningham from 14 Ioreal Street (not sure of spelling of street name) was present at my grandmothers birth.

Looking for living relatives or any history on my family.

Kind regards

Edward married Mary in St Enoch's Presbyterian Church Belfast in 1896, his father was Duncan, a missionary, hers was John, a sailor.

Here is the family in 1901:

Edward's father Duncan Kirkwood married Elizabeth Stewart in Berry Street Presbyterian Church Belfast in 1871. Duncan Kirkwood's father was William, a dresser in a family, while Elizabeth Stewart's father was James Stewart, a land steward.

As well as Edward in 1874, the couple had Walter in 1872, Duncan in 1876, Agnes in 1880 and Sarah in 1884 - details in familysearch.

Correction: Duncan's father William was a dresser in a factory

There's a will for Duncan Kirkwood on the PRONI website that is a possibility for Edward's father or brother, but it isn't digitised, you would need to order it...

There is a grave in Carnmoney Graveyard described as the family burying ground of Duncan Kirkwood, Belfast 1898.  This would tie in with a piece in the local newspaper in October 1891 which reports that Agnes (Edward's sister) died and was interred in Carnmoney Burying Ground.

There are also numerous references in the local paper about a Duncan Kirkwood all around the space of church work, sabbath school, charities, temperance etc. - for example, one article reports that he was ordained in St Enoch's Presbyterian Church in January 1890.

The likely parents of Mary Lyle are John Lyle and Mary Henderson.  Familysearch shows daughters Mary born 1871 and Eliza Jane born 1872 - an Elizabeth Lyle was a witness at Mary's wedding to Edward Kirkwood, father John Lyle's occupation of sailor is consistant across births and marriage. John Lyle married Mary Henderson in York Street Presbyterian Church 1862, his father John Lyle was a cabinet maker, her father John was a cooper.

Thank you so much for the information. If we wanted to order a copy of the will who would we order from also do you think we have any living relatives left in Belfast.
Thank you so much for providing this information it brings tears to or eyes to know where we come from. It was very interesting how my grandmother ended up with the name Stewart in her name.

Kind regards
Mary

I would simply contact PRONI citing details of the will and where you live and see what they say...

Hi Mary
Found the following snippet from a newspaper dated July 1893, could this be your Eliza Kirkwood, as this would give you an earlier address.
"Mortimer Jones was charged with fraud for having obtained money from Robert Chestnut, of 13 Chambers
Street, by claiming his niece was dead. He also told this story to Eliza Kirkwood of 54 Percy Street, who gave him £1. He was returned for trial at the Assizes."
Hope it helps.
Gary
