Title: Glasgow City Poorhouse records
Post by: mmclm on Saturday 22 September 12 20:40 BST (UK)
I am trying to find out info. re. the death of Hope Ruth Routledge in the City Poorhouse. She was six months old when she died there in July 1891.
Is there anyway to know if she had been abandoned,or whether the rest of her family were also"inmates" at the time. Her mother was named Margaret, father John and sister Elizabeth Louise aged five.
I can only find a Census for 1881.
Many thanks,
Mary

Ancestry have the transcript for the 1891 census but I cannot see this family.

Do you have any other information on the parents, ages, occupations etc.

If you have found them in 1881 can you please post the full reference .

Cant see them for 1891 but 1901 has Elizabeth with her grandmother

Annie Mclean 70
Elizabeth Routledge 15 grand-daughter Confectioner's Assistant
Kate P Bain 23
Fanny R McHougal 27

Address 28 Gardner Street

She then marries 1910 which will confirm if her parents are still living

1910 MUIR JAMES and ROUTLEDGE ELIZABETH LOUIS at ANDERSTON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK

Poorhouse was also a hospital so another possibility is she was in there rather than the poorhouse itself? If her death cert says she died there but usual address was........ then more likely hospital.

Looks like Margaret remarried in 1895 in Bridgeton, Glasgow to an Andrew Williamson but declares herself a spinster rather than a widow.

She definitely married John Routledge

1884   Groom ROUTLEDGE   JOHN   Bride MCLEAN   MARGARET   HUTCHESONTOWN   GLASGOW CITY/LANARK   644/11 0007

My hunch is the kids were living with grandma.

1901 shows Margaret living with Andrew Williamson with two sons John 7, Andrew 2 and a baby girl, Jamesina at 20 Lyon St, Cowcaddens

She died in 1915 in Glasgow - both husbands shown on the death cert.

Still not found her on 1891!  :(

Thank  you so much for this info. The sibling was named Elizabeth Louise Routledge.
After Hope's birth they may have left Glasgow. Margaret said that her husband John (a wine merchant) died in Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1892.I just could not trace them on the Scottish 1891 census.
It is possible that Hope was placed in Hospital rather than Poor House as her "usual address" was given as 5 Roslin Place.
Margaret's father was a coachman/butler,so domestic service was no new thing for her!

My grandfather,John McLean was born between her two marriages, in 1893.

Contact the Mitchell Library and ask them if they have any record of her in the Parochial Board archives. See

Regarding Margaret McLean RoutLedge Williamson, that was my great grandmother.  When she married Andrew, she was a widow, but on her marriage certificate she said spinster.  Her son John, which says illegitimate on Birth certificate born after John died.  Maggie’s ancestors came from Cawdor.  I have all the info about them all.  I am interested in finding out about my grandad, Andrew, her son as I don’t have much info about him.  He left my mum and gran when my mum was around 3 or 4.  Can’t seem to find anything on him,  any info would help.  Thanks.  Morag.

Did Margaret McLean RoutLedge Williamson have more than one child with John RoutLedge.  I only have John McLean born 1893.  I also have the 1891 census for her as well.

Thanks

Hello Morag and welcome to RootsChat.  It looks as if Mary (mmclm) hasn't been online since 2012.  However, you may get lucky as she should receive an email notification.  There are lots of helpful people on this Forum who may be able to assist your research.

Good luck, Kit

What information do you have on your Grandad, Andrew?

Are you talking about my great grandad who married Maggie or his son.  I have everything on both, Andrews,  my grandad left my mum and gran around around 1935, I think.  I believe he used to work in England, but would like to know anything about him, even if it is a death certificate, then I can research from there.  I’m thinking he’s had another family somewhere, but they never divorced, so I reckon I’m in for a few surprises.

Maggie died in 1915 and had 3 children to Andrew who died in 1942 from a head injury.  If you have any more questions about him or his children, who also have a colourful life, just let me know.  If you have anything on Andrew, son, would appreciate it, thanks.

Bye for now.

No, I have no information on Andrew but we can't help you if you don't tell us what you have on him.

When, where was he born?

When, where and who did he marry?

Where did they live after the marriage?

How many children did they have?

When does he show as deceased on marriage records of his children?

My great grandfather was Andrew Williamson and born around 1862 in Aramagh, Ireland.  He married Margaret McLean on  27 sept 1895, Bridgeton, Glasgow and who was also married to John RoutLedge.  She had three children with him, one in between marrying Andrew.  Andrew and Maggie had 3 kids, Andrew, james and Jamesina.  My grandfather was Andrew and he married Mary Ann Sloan in 1923.  They stayed mostly in the Cowcaddens, Milton area of Glasgow,  Maggie McLean died in 1915 and Andrew died age 80 in 1942.  It’s about my grandfather who I am really interested in, as I have all the details about great grandfather Andrew.  Thanks.  Morag.
