Can anyone help me with one? I am looking at a death record from 1860 in Scotland and cannot for the life of me work out the maiden name of the deceased person's mother (married name Crosbie). If it helps at all, based on the rest of the family, it's very likely they're Scottish and a reasonable chance that they might be from Dumfriesshire.
Thanks in advance,
Alan

Herran?
Alexander

Hovian/Hevian??

I think Alexander might be correct...comparing the "r" in "Crosbie" with those in the mystery name, Herran seems most likely. I was also thinking Horran, which makes less sense.

Been searching gravestone names in Dumfriesshire just in case - only one even close was Heron.
I was checking the 'r' in Crosbie and Margaret - and I didn't think they matched - but . . . . :-\ :D

I can also see what you're seeing, Wiggy, so it could be either/or :-\ ???
The "r" in Crosbie is like a little table - up, across and down :)

Hi folks,
A few suggestions there - I've not had any luck tracing the marriage as yet but I shall persevere, armed with a few more possibilities.
Thank you all for your input.

What about HOORAN/ HORAN?. I have ancestors with the HORAN surname who were born in Rathlin, Antrim. Ireland and later came to Scotland . Just one more to add to the confusion. Good luck Orkrad

My vote is for Herron/Heron

My initial reading was Hooran

For confirmation, the marriage or birth certificates should also give you the mother's maiden name.
