Hi,
I am trying to trace the parents of William Drury. He was born in Brighton in 1806 and was married to Sophia Giles in 1829. The last record I have of him is in the 1941 census when he was aged about 45 and living in Brighton with his family. Is there any way I can find out his parents names?

Hi
How do you know he was born in Brighton, the 1841 census (Brighton) says he was not bn in County. His age was recorded as 35 so he was 35-39 in 1841
ADDED - who were the witnesses to the marriage

Do you know when he died, is he mentioned on Sophias death certificate. Just in case there is any chance of finding him in later census.

The dates in the following are way off, but going by my index to the 1851 census where Sophia is on her own in Brighton with some of the children, William's son William (born Brighton 1837) has moved to Canterbury. The 1851 index entry for William 1837 is preceded by what may be his father William (stated as born Canterbury) whose birth year is given as 1814.
Seeing that Sophia's birth year on the 1851 index and transcript (she is shown as aged 48 & born Pevensey c1803) bears no resemblance to 1841 (born Sussex 1811), and that William was alive until at least 1844 to father Robert born 1845, it must be worth your while to check the Canterbury entry on the actual 1851 census to see if this could be father and an elder son together.
Sophia was identified by the other children with her by the way.
They were all living 18 Montague Street, Brighton. HO 107 1644/ folio 272.
Sophia died in Brighton in 1856. Roy G

Hi Roy, thanks for your reply.
Working backwards I have Sophia Sara Drury born in Brighton in 1833 her mother Sophia Giles was born in Pevensy in 1811. She married William Drury in 1829 in Brighton.
Thank you for the information about Canterbury I will investigate further.
Best regards

I think Roy is right ;D
The 1851 has William and son occ Carver. I had originally read William seniors occupation on the 1841 as Carrier but I think it does say Carver. William snrs age in 1851 is a bit out ;D
In 1861 (after Sophia has died) he is living in Kensington with a new wife Ellen and son Robert age 15 RG9 / 17 f96 p14 Birth place still Canterbury.

Possibly his 2nd marriage
Marriages Dec 1858
Drury William
Groom Selina Long
King Edmund
Raffety Ellen
St Geo Han Sq 1a 381
There is another marriage between a William Drury and an Ellen Wakeham Sept qtr 1859 St Giles reg district but the register entry for that gives William Drurys occupation as a Tailor.

I have not seen the originals but am curious about the profession of Carver and wonder if the original is, 'CARTER'? A Carter and Carrier were very much the same occupation and would explain why William and his son were found away from the family address in Brighton. Roy G

The 1861 gives his occupation as Carver Wood and Stone. ;D

Thanks for the clarification Rosie. Was Robert (aged 15 on 1861 census) down as born in Brighton, for the age is about right for him to be Sophia's youngest child? Roy G

Perhaps this is Robert's birth on FreeBMD. There are no others that match.

Patience,
It looks as though you need to post your original request on the Kent boards now unless you have a findmypast sub in which case Canterbury records are in the Canterbury collection but you have to browse them.
