Title: Victor Ernest JOHNSTON, Stranorlar
Post by: augereau on Tuesday 18 September 12 14:19 BST (UK)
Hello everyone !
My great grandfather's brother Dr Henry Maturin lived in Stranorlar and died in 1932.  One of his sons, the above, Victor apparently remained in Stranorlar and died there - perhaps there is a grave in the cemetery ??
The last trace of Victor I can find is the 1911 census.

Residents of a house 17 in Main Street (Stranorlar, Donegal) ... Johnston, Victor E, 24, Male, Son, Church of Ireland, Co Donegal, Engine Fitter at Works.

Can anyone tell me when he died ?  An Engine Fitter - does that mean he worked in a garage ?
Many thanks in advance for any help
Liz

No trace of a death for Victor in the Republic of Ireland up to 1958. Since you know he died there, that suggests his death was post 1958. You would need to contact GRO Roscommon to search for it.

Engine fitter at a works suggests to me that he maintained machinery in a factory, such as a mill, rather than that he worked in a garage with motor vehicles (of which there were very few in Stranorlar in 1911).

For reference here's a link to 1911 census- Victor born c1887:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Donegal/Stranorlar/Main_Street/509824

Same family in 1901:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Stranorlar/Stranorlar_Town/1199892

www.proni.gov.uk has this- "Johnston Henry Maturin of Stranorlar county Donegal M.D. died 9 July 1932 Probate Belfast 14 March to John Francis Arthur Simms solicitor and Amy Cordelia Johnston the widow. Effects £209. Trustee assets only." Perhaps clues in the Will?

Thank you very much to you all for all this information - On the Familysearch.org site, they also give a marriage for a Victor Ernest Johnston in Stranorlar in 4Q 1938 .... the plot thickens, my family always said that he never married !!!!!
Now, how can I get his wife's name ?
I am of course assuming that this is the right Victor Ernest Johnston, there can't be two of them in such a small place !

Order a copy of the cert from GRO Roscommon, or get the details from one of the pay to view sites, if they have 1938 records.

Victor Ernest Johnston married Mary Jones in 1938.
His father Dr Henry Johnston was the Dr Johnston of 'Johnston's Motorcar' fame.

Many thanks for everyone's help - yes, Dr Henry Johnston 's car was in Johnston's Motor Car.

His son Victor married late so probably didn't have any children.  I think I'll have to get to the graveyard in Stranorlar to see if there is a grave for the Johnston family - but I live in France so I won't be able to get there for the moment !!

Sorry everyone,
I clicked on REply before I'd finished ...

Just one last question about Victor's father - Dr Henry M. Johnston .
His first wife died in 1903 and he remarried an Amy Cordelia but I don't know her maiden name.
I have looked in the 1911 Census and Henry is still a widower at the time, and he died in 1932.
So his marriage must be between these dates ...  I wonder if anyone would have access to this record.

I really appreciate everyone's help. Thank you

I saw that record and wondered about it - somehow I don't think it is the right one - my VEJ was born in 1887 and I honestly think he remained in Stranorlar ...........   many thanks all the same !

Hi,

I've been looking for Relatives from Stranolar myself from my Grans side over the last few days and searching give me this thread.  Name stuck as I'm a Johnston myself through my Granda.

Meanwhile I've been looking the PRONI site to get signatures on the covenant of the family for my Gran.  Couple of names up from the one I was looking for I found Victor E Johnston.

Might be some interest to yourself if you haven't already found it.

Are your Johnstons the same as mine ??  Many thanks for the covenant signatures - do you have the date of the document.
Many thanks indeed for getting in touch.

It was the hundred year anniversary at the weekend.  So IIRC 28th September 1912.

As for a link in the Johnston Clan I have no idea yet.  Someone else is doing that side of the family who I'm hoping to get into contact with. Apparently they have a lot of the leg work done. But from looking at the census etc people aren't showing up where I understood they should be. So who knows.
