Hi,
I have recently come across an entry on the 1881 Census for a Fredc W Guy (Frederick William Guy) born 1838 Chiddingly and his wife Susanah, stating that they were living at Na Bd Oad, Chiddingly, Sussex. Now I can figure that the Oad means Road, but has anyone got any idea what the Na Bd stands for? At present I am unable to look up any other census returns to check to see if they are at the same address in 1891 and 1901, to help learn the address information, but I am aware they weren't there until then, thanks to help elsewhere. Hopefully some one might know what this road was actually called.
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards,
Natterjack

I agree with rosie
Looking at Google maps and searching with the previous census place name of Holmes Hill there is a Broadoak Wood. Couldn't find the Bat and Ball, there is a Golden Cross Inn so maybe it had a name change. All places within walking distance of each other

Thank you everyone,
it looks like the Near Broad Oak is a high possibility. And thanks for the 1891 census too. Looks like he moved to be back near his brother Silas, who he had been living with during the 1871 Census.
Again thank you and many kind regards,
Natterjack

Hi
The Bat and Ball is a listed building so should still be standing.
This 1839 tithe map http://www.coopersfarm.co.uk/chiddingly/tithemap.pdf shows the position of the Bat and Ball and also has Broad Oak Field, Broad Oak Plain, and Broad Oak Wood marked on it. There seems to be a Broad Oak Chapel as well, or at least associated field/garden.
Here is a pic of the Bat and Ball http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2802278

And there was a Broad Oak Farm too http://www.theweald.org/P2.asp?PId=Cd.BroadOakF
The order on the census is
Nr Broad Oak (Guy family)
Bat and Ball Inn (Shaw family)
Broad Oak Farm (Russell family)
Nr Broad Oak (Russell family)
So depending on how the enumerator walked perhaps it was near to the farm?
