-
approx what year was his birth
i can find no birth reg for him in cornwall
the only sidney bland i can find who died in world 1 is sidney john bland who died 1/11/1917 but his birthplace was northamptonshire
-
What information do you have so that we don't repeat it?
-
all i know is he lived in cornwall and was married to an elizabeth/betsy i believe he had several brothers in army and 2/3 of them died in ww1 as well.i think he had sister naomi ?
-
There are no births or marriages in Cornwall for a Sidney Bland according to Freebmd so it doesn't look as if he originally came from there. How do you know that he died in WW1?
The only Naomi Bland on Freebmd was born in Lancaster, June quarter 1842.
-
As far as I can see there are only 2 recorded deaths of a Sidney Bland in WW1
The one previously mentioned: Sidney J Bland hertfordshire Regiment, born Northamptonshire
and Sidney Bland born Shefford Bedfordshire , Corps of Royal Engineers 60341 died 18th April 1918 Mesopotamia.

just been on phone to reli she said he was in dcli and died wwi in france he had 2 other brothers die as well walter bland and ambeline bland.6 brothers went to war 3 was killed. she dont know where born but they all lived in cornwall dont know who parents were
-
According to CWGC, there are no Blands at all KIA WW1 with the DCLI :-\
-
she said he was in with her father steve thomas who was in same trench where sid bland his brother inlaw died
-
It might be worth you searching here http://www.cwgc.org/ to see if you can match up the three names.
There is a Walter Bland who died 27th May 1918, he was the son of Elizabeth Bland, Doncaster. There are quite a few W Bland, A Bland and S Bland, so you need to work through and cross match to see if any are brothers.
-
1911 census has nobody called Bland living in Cornwall? :-\
-
groom thats him he was with an elizabeth but they did live in cornwall
-
Hi All.
achooo the one mentioned by groom on reply 9 is on the 1901 Census
Bradford RG13/4157, Folio 114, Page 21.

There does not seem to be any children that would match with the
brothers you are looking for.?

June qtr 1895, Wiltshire, Ambeline Sheen

The only Nelson Bland I can see in a census that could fit was born about 1898 in Halifax, but none of his siblings have the names you mention.
The problem is that you are only going on word of mouth and that is probably second hand, as we are talking nearly 100 years ago. Memories get very muddled and as we have all found, stories tend to get twisted. I spent ages trying to find my mother's cousins who she said all went to Australia when she was about 6 in 1926. She said they were her mother's relatives. Turned out in the end they were her father's, so a completely different name and although they did go to Australia it was separately and between 1929 and 1954.
As we've said there is no Sidney Bland in Cornwall in 1911 and no one at the moment seems to be able to link the names you have mentioned to one family.
I think you need to use Freebmd http://www.freebmd.org.uk and start with the more unusual names and see if you can find births for them, then see if you can find any of the other siblings born in the same place. It wont be easy and will probably take some time. The 1911 census will help, but we are not allowed to do look ups on here. This gives you some ideas of how you can use the free index http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,492718.0.html

Are you sure you are not just clutching at straws? There is no connection with Cornwall with Nelson and according to the latest census the family consisted of 6 living children, 3 boys, 3 girls none, apart from Nelson, names you have mentioned.

thanks for your help anway they did live in cornwall and was in arm ww1 never mind thanks

Hi,
I know this post is from several years ago but I have the information you need.
The gentleman you are looking for went by his mother's surname Hughes. He is my husband's great great grandfather. He has 2 sons named Nelson (mother unknown) and Sidney Hughes (mother: Betsy/bessie Orchard)
His parents were Silas Bland and Sarah Hughes. We have managed to find a large proportion of the bland family but we are stuck on Sarah Hughes.
Let me know if you want any more information I have some censuses and war records.
Best wishes
