Title: Morris (Parry) family
Post by: kaycee on Saturday 15 September 12 10:25 BST (UK)
Hoping to find descendants of Colin Parry (or even Colin himself)
who was born in Ledbury Herefordshire UK probably in 1920's, son of George Morris and ??? Parry. Believed to have lived in Blackwater, Australia. I would be a cousin of Colin's, but have only just heard about him. Any info or contact appreciated.
Kath (nee Morris)

Hi Kath,

I'm not sure if same relative but my Grandfather was Colin Roger Parry born to Gladys Ivy Parry in 1937. Her address on his birth certificate was Ledbury Herefordshire but no father registered. He moved to Australia in 1958 and lived in Blacktown.

Hi

I think I have found his death Notice in the Sydney Morning Herald 19.10.1988.

As it contains details of his children who may be living, I will not  include it in this post. If you would like a copy send me a PM with your email address

Thanks Cass. I have all that info. Have everything from the time he arrived in Australia in 1958. I have his last address which was on the ship arrival info into Aust. He married my grandmother and my father is his eldest child. We just don't know who his father is or his mother's family. I think he may have been sent to Banados as a child but wasn't adopted and left when he was a teenager??

Hi Reeparry,
I am assuming that you are familiar with the 1939 register in Ledbury for Gladys I. PARRY (domestic servant) and her sister Lily M PARRY (factory hand). On the register are three children, two of whom are redacted (probably one is your Colin Roger PARRY).

Gladys Ivy Parry was the illegitimate daughter of Eliza Ann BROWN. When she married Henry PARRY, Eliza Ann’s children took on the Parry surname. I don’t believe Henry Parry was the biological father to Gladys Ivy or to her brother Ivor Leonard.
Here is information about her mother and family.

Eliza Anne “Annie” BROWN - Timeline
10 Jun 1877  Eliza Ann BROWN baptised Awre, Gloucestershire (born 15 May)
Parents Thomas BROWN (labourer) and Mary HUGHES – married 14 Jul 1872 Awre, Gloucestershire
Birth rego:
BROWN, ELIZA  ANN               Mother maiden name - HUGHES

1902 Daughter Gladys Ivy born East London

1908 Son Ivor Leonard born East London

July 1912 Elizabeth Brown, with children  Gladys Ivy and Ivor Leonard are in the Pontypridd workhouse.

1913 Daughter Lily Maud born Whitby

Dec 1914 Henry Thomas PARRY attests for military service with Welsh Regiment Army service Corps (Corporal 23224). He names his next of kin as Annie PARRY mother of his children (but not married) and he names his three children Gladys Ivy, Ivor Leonard and Lily Maud, & records all as illegitimate. Home address Weston square, Barry, Sth Wales. He is unfit for military service and is discharged the following year.

24 Oct 1915 Gloucester  Marriage to Henry Thomas PARRY
-   Both aged 35, both residing at  22 Tower Westgate, St Nicholas
-   Her father Thomas BROWN – railwayman
(Henry Thomas PARRY worked as a stoker / fireman on the railway)

March 1917 in Ledbury, Henry Thomas PARRY is convicted for breaking and entering. He has a long list of very regular and similar convictions going back to 1899. Military Authorities undertaking to take charge.

(Mother’s name is STONG.? Maybe mother is not Eliza Ann but someone else. Or the name Strong is just made-up. Note that Eliza Ann did have a sister called Lily Maud)
Lily Maud PARRY married twice - in 1941 to Ronald TABB and in 1964 to Joseph CALLAGHAN. She died in 1993.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much!! I did see the 1939 register but couldn't work out if Lily was a sister or not and where Keith (5 years old) if in!!

Thank you so much again, this is amazing information to finally have. Hopefully will now be easier to trace more.

I suspect 5 year old Keith might belong to Lily. But you would need to look into that some more. :)
His birth certificate will give you this information.

If George Morris is the father for Colin, I would look at the George Morris living a few houses away, in the very same street as Gladys and Lily, in Ledbury in 1939.
He is divorced, born 1903, and a wharehouse labourer.

ADDED. I note that on Colin Parry’s death certificate, his father is named as George. Whoever the informant was at his death, they knew something about his father.

Ree, I don’t believe that Colin was sent to Barnardos. I think he grew up with, or close, to his mother. Colin’s last address in the UK is Dines Green Worcester, as given on the shipping manifest. This appears to be the next street to Drake Ave, which is where his mother is listed in the electoral rolls.

There was talk he went to Banados as a child during the war while his mother worked?? And later in life was back with his mother. Was only there for a few years. And I think just rumours about a dad named George Morris.

Yes, during the war - I imagine that is possible. I think it is possible to apply for Barnados records.
He wasn't old enough to appear on electoral rolls before he emigrated.
He had two siblings - I wonder if he knew them at all. (I will send you a PM)

I think there is a little waiting time involved, but worth the inquiry.

A bit more information regarding the Brown family of Awre, Gloucestershire

Thomas BROWN  baptised 18 May 1846 Awre. Parents were John BROWN and Esther / Hester HUGHES (married 16 Oct 1825 Awre)

Mary HUGHES born 1846 Awre; died 1920. Parents were Edward HUGHES and Margaret MORGAN (married 30 Apr 1838 Newland)

[Interesting note: Esther Hughes (1799-1873) and Edward Hughes (1808-1863) were siblings, children of John HUGHES and Anne DIXON – married 1792 Awre.   Therefore Thomas Brown and Mary Hughes were cousins.]

Children of Thomas Brown and Mary Hughes:
•   John Edward BROWN 1874 – married abt 1904 to Emma NIBLETT from East Dean
•   Eliza Ann BROWN 1877 – married PARRY
•   Clara BROWN b. 29 Dec 1878 – 1901 census a servant in Ealing
•   Lillie Maud BROWN b. 11 Oct 1881 – married Sept 1933 Cheltenham to widower Walter WHITE
•   John Thomas BROWN 1883 – 1911 census working in Pontypridd Wales
•   Frank Harold BROWN 1885 – married Nov 1913 Awre to Minnie Elizabeth TURLEY
•   Esther Margaret BROWN 1887

Further questions – these two boys are with their Brown grandparents in 1911
1/  Ernest BROWN born 1 Jan 1899 Awre, the illegitimate son of whom? He was a sailor in Royal Navy. Married 1930 to Muriel Sophia HANCOCK. Ernest died at sea in 1940. He might be Eliza Ann’s first child.
2/  Reginald BROWN born Awre 1909, the illegitimate son of whom? Clara? Lily?
