Title: James and Andrew Murray
Post by: liz_bern on Thursday 13 September 12 03:39 BST (UK)
I am trying to find what happened to my grandfathers brothers who it is claimed went to America I am guessing sometime after 1875.  They were born in Tillicoultry, Clackmannan, Scotland on 26 April 1860 and 17 November 1862 respectively.  Their parents were William and Agnes Murray (nee Jamieson).

Hope that someone may be able to help with this.

Cheers Liz

Unfortunately, James Murray was a common name.  Do you know when they were last seen in Scotland, or what their occupations might have been, please?  Andrew Murray is not as common, but I haven't yet found "your" Andrew Murray.

Hi Lisa,

In the 1881 census in Scotland Andrew is listed as age 18 and a Mechanic in factory.  James is not mentioned so he may have already left Scotland by then.

Yes the names are quite common unfortunately, also they were not given middle names which always makes it harder.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Liz

Hi Lisa,

Wow that is absolutely amazing.  So he didnt emigrate till quite late, I thought he would have gone sooner.

He is an older brother of my grandfather who wasnt born until 1877, so Andrew would have been 15 before my grandfather was even born.  That is absolutely incredible, will go to Scotlands People now and get a cross reference for their marriage and suchlike.

Thankyou so much for your help. ;)

Cheers Liz :)

Andrew Murray, age 52, married, Chief Engineer, born Scotland.  Wife: Agnes Murray, 83 Ca? St, M?
(Looks like 83 Callierme St Masherwell.   :-\  Sorry, it's a dark image and it is difficult to read.)

Hi again Lisa,

Yes, I have found their marriage certificate, they were married 27 August 1886, so it all ties in.  Her maiden name was Agnes Wotherspoon.  Will check out the childrens births when I get a new ink cartridge for my printer.

The place that you cant read could be Motherwell, which is actually where my mother was born near Glasgow.

The marriage cert lists him as an engine fitter (journeyman), so it is all looking good.

Cheers Liz :)

Wow you are really finding the goods.  Thanks for that.

You are quite welcome, Liz.

Hi Sandra.  I saw Andrew's burial "early on" (prior to reading the census records), but ignored it because no other family members were listed in the same cemetery.  Thank you for looking, as Agnes is buried in the same cemetery (incorrect year of birth, but it is her).

Good night for now.

Hi Sandra,

Thanks for that.  Yes the date is wrong for Agnes but must definitely be her especially with the Wotherspoon put in there.

What can I now do to find if there was any grandchildren for these two.  Not too sure about searching for American ancestors.

Hope you have some ideas.

Cheers Liz

Last Residence: 34683  Palm Harbor, Pinellas, Florida,
SSN was issued in Pennsylvania (Before 1951)

Hi Sandra,

Thank you again.  I dont think I am going to find many offspring as it looks like Agnes may have been the only one that got married.  Also Margaret their first born may have got married as she is not listed on the census of 1840.  William the only boy appears to be living at home with mum and dad in 1940 also so it looks like the Murray name has died here as well.

Thanks once again for your help.

Cheers Liz   :)

Thanks for that Sandra.  Been without a computer for a couple of days as our computer closed down the other day and then decided it wouldnt open again.  Had to go and buy a new one.  You have given me some more things to chase up.  It is a shame that we havent been able to find anything on James, but I'm sure that something may come up eventually.

Cheers Liz

Hi everyone,  thankyou so much for your help.  I have just found James, unfortunately he died in 1865 so obviously our sources were wrong in saying that both brothers went the America.  At least I have found out about Andrew, just a shame that he doesnt seem to have any Murray heirs.

I will still try and follow up Margaret who may have got married and have had children, so here's hoping.

Thankyou once again.

Cheers Liz    :)
