I am trying to find out where James Slack was born in around 1824. I have searched for him in Norbury Staffordshire, and am now of the opinion it must be Knotbury Staffordshire. I believe his father was also called James, who was a labourer, although that covers a lot, ie, roads etc and farming. I also think James jnr had a brother called Abraham. James and Abraham were silkmen by trade, and could have been employed at a silk/dye works in Wildboarclough Macclesfield, which is on the border of Knotbury Staffs. Can anyone help me solve this mystery please. James (1824) eventually lived in Sutton/Langley Macclesfield, where he eventually died in 1898., although I cannot even find where he is buried. Help please.

Is this his marriage - father was James

I also think James jnr had a brother called Abraham. James and Abraham were silkmen by trade
1851, 1871 and 1881 show birthplace as Wildboarclough Cheshire
1871 shows James has a son called Abraham

Hi Carole. thats right it is the right James, I have his marriage cert for 1854. I just cannot confirm where he was born. I am beginning to believe it is Knotbury Staffs, in which case I thi nk the Parish will be Quarnford, but I still am at a loss. I thin k the thing is to keep plodding on.

It is probably NORBURY, Staffs. There is an impressive canal network at Norbury Junction. The village is near to Eccleshall, Staffs.
Good luck.

Hi Eileen
Did you see my reply above re: James birthplace. It is only the 1861 that shows his birthplace as Staffs
1851, 1871 and 1881 show birthplace as Wildboarclough Cheshire
Also - if you check Abraham Slack - 1851/61/71/81 has Wildboarclough as his birthplace but he was not connected to the silk industry - he appears to be a farm labourer
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wildboarclough

If he died in Sutton, then he is probably buried at the very pretty church there in the village:
Oops, tried to post you the link but this site won't allow.
There is a very helpful PCC who I am sure could help you with burials.

Thank you to everyone who is trying to help me find where James Slack was buried . I know he died in 1898 in Langley/Sutton Macclesfield Cheshire aged 75, but I cant find any grave for him anywhere. I have walked all round the churchyards and still cant find him, or his wife Margaret. Still I will keep on searching. again thanks to everyone

You say that you've walked around the graveyards of Sutton and Langley - but you don't say whether you have looked at the parish records for the churches in the area. Not everyone who was buried has a headstone ;) My suggestion would be to consult the burial records for the churches.
