Would love to locate great grandfather Henry O'Neil born in Armagh c 1812. Married Eleanor/Elizabeth born c 1811 (hard to make out on england 51 census) Marriage would be around 1843-5 in Armagh. Three known children born Armagh: Charles 1845,Henry 1846 and Catharine 1847. Came to England circa 1849. Also could have lived in Scotland.
Any possible descendent's still in Ireland?

Would love to locate our Irish rellies of Great Grandad Henry O'neil born Armagh 1812. Married either Eleanor/Elizabeth born about 1811( cant make name out on 51 English census) Marriage around 1843. Three known children born in Armagh: Charles 1845, Henry 1846 and Catharine 1847. Came to North East England circa 1849, with lots of other O'Neils. May have also lived in Scotland. No sign of Henry after 51 census. Could possibly returned to Ireland.

Civil registration in Ireland of births, deaths and Catholic marriages started 1864 (from 1845 for Protestant marriages) so for earlier dates you need to look for church records (if they still exist). To find church records you need to know their religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland not just county).
First complete Irish census is 1901.

Thank you for replying so promptly. Our O'Neils are catholic. We dont have a clue where they lived in Armagh. It's gonna be a long search I suspect.

Aghadowey is right.
Will be near impossible without searching through all Church records that exist for County Armagh Churches, and even then some church records may not exist anymore.

Is Henry's fathers name recorded on the marriage certificate?
There are fragments of the 1821 census for Forkhill still intact, on which there are 85 oneill surnames. There is one Henry Oneill aged 60, Married, Head of household, a farmer , living in the townland of Tiffcrum in Forkhill County Armagh.
There are 11 other oneill names living in the same townland

Hi Otto.
Mm, interesting. I dont have marriage cert for Henry, but the Henry you found could be valuable, and, the names you have with him on the fragment. Then, it could be a blind alley. I am cherry picking with this rellie. My hope was to possibly find a birth record of one of the kids mentioned, born in Armagh to (Henry b1812 Armagh) as Great grandfather Charles, (Henry's son) is a definite birthdate 1845. I thought this would give a better address/ location but realise this is iffy. Which church ???
If the Henry you found is Henry snr, he would have been 50 when Henry Jr was born. Blimey, I am carried away, you must be fumbling through this................ I really appreciate your time with this. Oooooo, it's difficult to track people in Ireland.
Thanks so much, Dido.

There will be no birth certificates for anyone born before 1864 which is why church records are so important.

Hello,
I checked the 1851 census and the wife is Eleanor (or variation).
Interestingly it also states that Catherine was born in Durham.
I then checked the birth records and there is one possible :
Catherine O'Neill,
June quarter1847
Ref 24-167
If you apply for the certificate giving the parents' names they will check that this is the correct Catherine. From the certificate you will get the mother's maiden name so this will help with the marriage search in Ireland

Hi Sansgrounder.
I have now found maiden name of Catharine's mother. Her name is Ellen Hughes. I guess Henry Oneill and Ellen/Elanor Hughes would have been married in Armagh about 1845. I have searched on Irish Foundation for the church marriage in Armagh but alas no name matches and couldn't afford to search further. Isn't it expensive??? Well at least I have a maiden name.

Sorry, I have only just read your last message. If you contact the Gateshad registry office about the birth certificate for Catherine you can ask them only to send it if the relevant parents are correct. They may charge a small fee for the look up.

Hello dido,
di8d you get my PM email sent last week?

Hello Lyttle.
Sorry about delayed reply just managed to open my mail, machine probs........
Thanks for the info on Charles. This could be an interesting lead back to Ireland and will work on it. The 1845 Charlie came over to England with his dad Henry at the start of the blight. He married and stayed here, all his kids were born here and stayed here. Lots of the Oneil clan came over but I'm sure not all.
