Hello,
I would like some sort of help getting me on the right track to finding out who an ancestor was living with for 30 years in London.
His name is John Constantino Fone and from 1937 he was living with a lady called Matilda Owen and through the years various other "Owen's" - i am particularly interested in who Matilda is? Is she a girlfriend?? Also there is a Terence Owen who turns up later on in the registers - is this the son of Matilda?
Any help would be gratefully appreciated
Thanks in advance

Just because they lived in the same house, doesn't neccesarily mean they were together.
Many large houses back then were split into flats or even just small bedsits and lots of families lived under one roof.
John may have been renting a room off the Owen family.

On two of the censuses he is down as Terence James Owen, someone of that name b 18 May 1921 died in Tunbridge Wells in 1983.
A birth of a Terence J Owen in Jun 1921 in St Giles shows a mmn of Wheatley which leads me to this marriage.
Marriages Jun 1916
Owen Frederick A to Wheatley in St. Giles 1b 1168
Wheatley Matilda to Owen in St. Giles 1b 1168

Thank you for the information - i am told that John left his wife for someone else and had 2 children (both boys) and i was wondering if this could be her. It was around this time and he had changed his surname to Fone (his step fathers name) Coincidence?
I will have a look into this information and appreciate your help

I think Matilda (Wheatley) may have been the one born in the March 1/4 of 1894 in St Giles.
Matilda Owen's death is probably in Windsor in Dec 1970 with a dob of 20 Jan 1894.

i have come across thiss birth which may be who i am looking for - if this is the case he would not show up on the register until 18 or 21 years?

Yes that's him and you are correct back then he would not be on there till he reached 21,the age of consent(and voting) didn't reduce to 18 till 1969.

there is also a john w owen that appears in 1945 but cant seem to find his birth

Matilda married Frederick Albert Owen on 30 Apr 1916.
He died in Colindale hospital (Army records) in June 1922 aged just 33.
Not much time to be together and have kids eh?
Maybe the other Owen's were his rellies?

Excellent Find......
Hmmm, how interesting... so she had terence in 1921
I am wondering how long he had been in the army for by then - could you send me the link for the army records please
-
I wondered if they had been a couple before his army service and if the John W Wheatley with a mmn of Wheatley may have been hers?
I will PM you the link to his army service records.

The TNA marriage register entry is on Ancestry. According to that, Frederick Albert Owen was a 'printer's cutter' when the couple got married on 30 Apr 1916.
There's also some Army records on Ancestry. Frederick signed up with the Middlesex Regiment on 15 Aug 1914, for three years, so if he was a printer's cutter when he married in 1916, then something must have cut short his army career ?

Solved.... he was discharged on 9th Jul 1915 "Para 392 xvi K. R. Sick"
King's Regulations Paragraph 392 section 16 - " No longer physically fit for service"

Go to the very first page in each district and there's an index.
