Title: Spiers family, Kilkeel c.1890
Post by: RoseUK on Tuesday 11 September 12 18:46 BST (UK)
Hi,
Does anyone have records for any Spiers families from Kilkeel, Co.Down? I am looking for James Spiers, born about 1842, who had a son also called James Spiers born about 1884.

Thanks.

Hello Rose,

Number of Spiers on  Reference John Spiers Kilkeel (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/S/Speers.htm), may be the father of your James baptised 1844.

Hi,
Not sure if this is yours but James Spiers married Jane NEWSAM ( NEWSON in another source) in 1869 in Maghera Church of Ireland, Kilkeel District. Fathers' names were Henry Spiers and James Newsam (on).

Regards

Hello Rose,

The birth record below is the Civil Registration for the birth of James in 1884

James Spiers Birth (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FBHD-3MK)

In addition to the marriage put forward by Kingerswell another worth looking at occurred in 1869 in Co Down in the registration district Newry the father of James is a John Spiers and is possibly associated with the link in my previous post.

James Spiers Marriage (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FYST-ZTB)
Spouse (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FY33-R3F)

I have seen your other posts on James Spiers and I think lightning has struck again. Literacy levels at the time were poor and try as I might I have struggled with the surname Brigget. The intent could have been to record the name as Mary Bridget............ , who knows.

A previous stumbling block was the use of Cunningham as part of Thomas Spiers name, which I believe remains unresolved as to its use. There are several Cunningham families associated with the Kilkeel area and it could possibly be the link to what is Mary Bridgets surname. Fanciful hey.

Should this prove to be the case, if and when you obtain certs, the family roots appear to be in Leitrim,Kilkeel,Co Down with Aughnaloopy being a secondary location.

John Spiers Deceased (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FTQF-DMN)
Eliza Doran Spiers (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FRP4-C2N)

Details of James 1884 birth certificate will no doubt resolve which family he belongs to.
