Hi All,
I found Ernest in a box of photos on a stall at a craft fair and couldn't resist him. I would love to give him a good home with a descendant if we could find one.

Thanks Jenn,
Excellent sleuthery!
So that puts the date of the photo at about 1890. Do we have any details about the photographer Stewart & Co. working at 42 Bourke St. East at that time? Just to confirm.
Is there any hope of finding a marriage for him?

They were both aged 33, he was a merchant. and their last address was given as 71 Melrose Ave, N.W. 2. You were correct, Sue, about it only being a visit that was planned. :)

Whe he died in 1915 BERNARD MARKS left a lengthy will regarding his sizeable estate.
Within it he lists his children (which we have already thanks to Jenn and some grandchildren too-

.
BERNARD JOHN MARKS "son of my son MARK MELBOURNE MARKS"
I wonder if this is IRENE HANNAH MARKS taking a trip to London.

Wow people you have been busy! :o
It looks like we may have at least one living relative (thanks Sue for the PM). I'll see what I can do to make contact. If any of you manage direct contact please feel free to point them here so they can PM me.
He looks so good in his sailor suit. I do hope we can find him a good home. I have to admit if his name hadn't been on the back I wuld have been certain he was a girl. What lovely long hair he had.
Yes I did find him in the UK.

Do let us know if you manage to return the photo to a family member, Paul.
We'll all be interested. It is just so satisfying when you can do that.

Amazing news!! I got a reply from Melbourne and we were right! :o The A Marks we found in Melbourne is indeed the son of Ernest Norman Marks. He's sent me a nice e-mail with some extra detail for us and I've sent off the picture to him.
Here's most of his reply:
Dear Paul,
We have been away for the last few days and on our return your letter was waiting for me.
I must admit that it knocked the “wind out of my sails”
Yes I am A Marks, the son of Ernest Norman Marks and I was born in 1929.
After reading your letter I put my father’s name into Google and up came the photograph that I had just received from you.
All of father’s generation have long since gone, and at 83 I am the last of my generation left, so there is no one I can consult with.
I can however tell you that the note on the back of the photo was written by my father, I can tell that from his signature.
Do you have some connection with the Marks family?
I went through all the records that appear on Google, you certainly have done an awful amount of research on the family.
Jane and Leslie were from dad’s first marriage and yes Jane’s mother Marjorie died with the birth of her daughter.
You are also correct when you say the family home was at 1078 Malvern Rd.
I am wondering if the card was in an envelope, so we could discover who it was sent to?
Dad brought the Kayser hosiery brand to Australia, in the early 1920’s In the UK it traded as Kayser Bondor. Australia imposed very heavy duties at the start of the depression in 1929. Father prevailed upon the Americans to build a large factory in Melbourne and the firm went on to be one of largest producers of hosiery and Women’s lingerie in the country.
I would like to receive the card if that is ok with you. My wife is very keen on “family trees” and has done a huge amount on her family. Orwell Michaelis was her father.
If we can supply any further information, we are only too happy to help you
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
All in all I feel quite chuffed that we managed to do so well. Congratulations one and all for a job well done.

That would rate with one of the happiest and most satisfying outcomes on any R chat search where I have been involved.
It sounds as if "A" is pleased to have the photo and perhaps he has descendants who will also cherish it.
Quite wondeful ;D

Excellent work, gang!
I'm a grandson of Ernest Norman Marks (and "A"'s nephew).
Pleased to see my grandfather as he was when very young.

What an amazing piece of networking this has turned out to be ;D
Good of you to join up to let us know your connections and place in the story.

I've just caught up with this.
How wonderful, and it is very satisfying to know that we've all been able to help re-unite Ernest with his family.
Paul must feel very glad he couldn't resist the photo in the box on the stall at the Craft Fair. :D :D
Dee :)

That photo was just meant to be back with family . Ernest no doubt would be looking down smiling :)
This could be another story for the family to pass down. And a great one it is to.
-
Thanks for the feedback all - I have to say it was wonderful to find a home for such a great photo. Such a pleasure to find a direct descendant too.
Ernest was actually from last year's craft fair - I bought another four this year and they are all making progress with none shipped out yet.

Don't build up too many hopes - remember that these are abandoned photos. They may have been abandoned because the family had no descendants (like my Lizzie Chattock last year). But please do have a poke around - you never know what you may uncover and it is a great buzz when the team comes through with a win.

Hi Paul,
Just out of interest where all these 4 photos in the same box?
-
Yes but it was clearly a number of job-lots all put together so I suspect they were from house clearances or a car boot.
-
Great that you've got all the threads going, Paul. It may take quite some time, but sooner or later you could get a response. I'm still getting the odd response to photos I posted on here some years ago.

Ok thanks. I was thinking maybe if they were connected and if one family was found they might know about the other people in the rest of the photos.
I should have known it wouldnt be that easy ;D

Me too - I think that is one feature of this hobby that makes it so attractive. A lot of the hardest work is the waiting.

Goodness I nearly missed your comment amongst all these messages!! What a lovely thought, joining up just so you can post here.
RootsChat is an amazing place where all sorts of amazing people join in just for the fun of helping out. I am sure I speak for all involved in saying it was a pleasure to help find a home for the photo.
It is good to know your uncle is pleased with the photo and we all hope it is cherished as it always should have been.

I have just completed digitising and putting up a catalogue of Ernest Norman Marks' home library as of 1962, when he was 74 years old. This means that members of Rootschat have not only seen his picture aged 2, but now an insight into his intellectual interests as an adult. He was a businessman, not an academic, but his library doesn't reflect his business interests, with one exception. He was my grandfather.

Thank you for the fascinating insight. What an amazing image of the man as an educated adult. He clearly had strong views about the war and how the Jews were treated along with a clear respect for Churchill.
Good to see also such a far reaching collection of the classics with seemingly all of the major and influential writers and poets represented from Shakespeare through Shaw to Steinbeck.
Thank you for sharing.

Great story.
I wish more people would rescue old photos. Makes me hopeful that someone out there will find some family members of mine, so that I can solve some of my own mysteries.
Thank you for being so thoughtful.

I just found this topic. Amazing story. I am not related directly to this Marks branch, although many of their cousins are my cousins, and Anthony's wife and children are my blood cousins.
