Hi I am looking for anyone who has an ancestor in the Quorrobolong Cemetery NEW South Wales. According to many departments this cemetery does not exist, but it did. A lost and forgotten place. I am looking for anyone who has information about an ancestor in this cemetery.
Persons so far are Susannah Sharpley died 7 May 1859 ( 58 years) and Catherine Crofton died 22 September 1860 (16 months).
Thank you

Hi merlinmagic :)
Have you had a look on the parish maps for Quorrobolong, online here: http://parishmaps.lands.nsw.gov.au/pmap.html
You might spot the cemetery on one of the earlier maps. Was it an "official" cemetery, do you know, or a private burial spot (on a property, for example)?

Hi
Thanks for your comments. We know approximately where it is, the lands department says it does not exist The councils say it does not exist, the church says it does not , we are trying to find out about how many were buried there. It did exist. About he only way we are going to know who is buried there is to ask family historians if they have an ancestor buried there according to the death certificate
Cheers

There is a tape of an interview with a Quorrobolong resident, Ted Heaton, on Australian Tales
http://pandora.nla.gov.au/pan/100781/20090610-1630/hosting.collectionsaustralia.net/newcastle/greta/oral/tape109a.html
One of the key tape positions
is 062 Location of old Quorrobolong Cemetery
It's on an archived website. http://trove.nla.gov.au/website/result?q=%22quorrobolong+cemetery%22~8&l-urlKeyDomain=100781
Not sure if it is much help other than as anecdotal evidence of its existence

Hi
We know approximately where this old cemetery is but it looks like it has not been used since before 1900. Graves dated 1860 and 1859. We are trying to find out who else may be buried there. It is now on private property and the headstone found were buried under a few inches of earth. Anyone with a death certificate that states the burial took place at Quorrobolong is what we are after. When did it cease to be used.
We are pleased to have responses to this chat site, thank you all .

How to I get to hear the taped of Ted Heaton or get a transcript please

I'm afraid I don't know ... Hopefully they have kept these tapes as they sound like a valuable family history resource but the links to them were on archived websites.
I just thought it added "weight" to the evidence of its existence by the fact that Quorrobolong cemetery was an issue of discussion.
(What a great name - Quorrobolong ;D )

A few years ago I lived in South Cessnock for about two years. I was aware from my talks with various locals that there was a cemetery there. I think that some of them might have occasionally visited it, I travelled out there for recreation but had no interest in an old cemetery. I normally finished my days out by going to the Ellalong Pub.
Another place not far away toward the coast is O'Donnelltown, it is a ghost town with just remains of old foundations and it think it has an old cemetery as well. Does anybody know anything about that place as I am an O'Donnell and have a cousin who lives near there.

Hi Merlin Magic, I dont know if this relates directly to you but there has been discussion about this cemetery on Hunter Valley Genealogy.

Seems only two graves (With Memorials) anyway although could be more without?
Also on TROVE death of Alex kelly at quorrobolong 1848. Coal was not mined there at this time by the way pursuits were timber and agriculture.

Thanks for your post. We know of the cemetery which was used 1860, we are trying to gather information about who was buried there. It has been disused for over a century. Asking any researcher in family history to post if they have a death certificate for an ancestor buried there. Thanks for your response.

According to many departments this cemetery does not exist, but it did
Sounds as though the cemetery wasn't gazetted otherwise there would be records in the NSW Gazette and at local government level as well.

I think the cemetery was but it possibly has not been used since 1870's or so, there is no records for burials there but there was. It is possible the burial registers have disappeared, burnt lost, flood damaged. I would like to compile a list of people buried there as a forgotten and lost cemetery. I ask anyone who has a death certificate of an ancestor to let me know please.
These people worked hard to forge Australia for us now there names are forgotten. Sharpley and Cofton are two names we have so far.

Hi,
My g.g.uncle is buried at Quorrobolong Cemetery. These are the details we have.
The information came from the Wollombi Court Death Records.
Unnamed male infant 3 days old born 30 Dec 1867 and died 3 Jan 1868 at Wollong and buried on 3 Jan 1868. His parents were John Garland and Mary Garland (nee Henderson) We have the birth and death registrations from the NSW BDMs.
Hope this helps with your research.
